introduction to Isle of Wight bed & breakfast accommodation

Deep in the rolling Shire of the Isle of Wight, this is a place where comfort leads to adventure. We provide one to one instruction on countryside skills and woodland crafts. We are situated one mile from the coast on the south of the Isle of Wight.

Oswald is a previous hedgelaying cup winner and trainer in countryside skills and woodland crafts. He is passionate about the proper management of the countryside and creating diverse habitats for flora and fauna. He will train up to four people in one or more skills; training takes place on the 12 acres of land.

We have a twin room available for guests. The business is run on environmentally sympathetic principles and guests can contribute to ideas or actual applications of their own environmental practices. Sheep friendly dogs are welcome and will be invited to sleep in the kitchen. There are stables for horse trekkers, lock up sheds for cyclists, drying facilities for walkers and if you want to learn the ukulele, Oswald can teach you in five minutes.

Nestling in the middle of an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) where traditional enclosed pastures abound, we believe the future of farming and the change in the islandscape is down to all of us. That's why we want to show people countryside skills and woodland crafts. Through this sort of ecotourism we want to create an environment where we can all be children and learn through play.

how this holiday makes a difference
This is a family home open to people who want to share the space and time with environmental enthusiasts (not experts) where you can learn a countryside skill or woodland craft. The activity is a medium through which you will relax and be at one with the environment.

Hedge laying, Isle of Wight B&BEnergy efficient light bulbs are fitted throughout the house. All biodegradable material is composted, from both the house and garden. Any by-products of hedge laying operations is chipped to make garden mulch. Rainwater is collected for plant watering. Metal, glass and papers are sorted and recycled and plastic is recycled by the local authority. The 12 acres of land is managed in a sustainable way with great emphasis in habitat creation and diversity. Areas of the land including parts of the garden are allowed to remain undisturbed to promote natural habitats. Wight Wildlife and The footprint Trust are regular visitors and monitor ongoing projects.

All food for our breakfasts are sourced locally. The eggs, bacon, bread, butter, tomatoes, jam, marmalade, honey, milk and fruit juice are all made on the Isle of Wight. Local builders, carpenter, electrician and village garage are used for their services. The local post office has recently opened a visiting post office in the bell tower of the local church. We use that service and the local producers who use the opening times to sell their wares.

Tourism can be good and bad for destinations & local people.

We carefully screen every holiday against our criteria for responsible travel.

'Look behind the brochure' to find how each holiday makes a difference (see left).

We don't claim to be perfect - there is no global accreditation - but we've led the way since 2001 and screened 1000's of holidays.

We invite every traveller to write a review about their experiences and responsible tourism.

This valuable feedback is sent to the people who run the holidays. We keep a very close eye on it and take off holidays that don't live up to our standards.
