description
Bali luxury resort and spa
This resort, in the traditional Balinese hill village of Payangan and on the banks of the mystical and magical Ayung River, is just five kilometres from Bali's artistic centre of Ubud, the place where artists and painters, writers and musicians from around the world find their inspiration. Here guests can visit a number of art galleries and museums, see dramatic and opulent temple festivals and dances, and take in the magic of the real Bali.

The hills and valleys surrounding the resort contain a number of traditional villages and family compounds as well as some of the most spectacular scenery in Bali. Various tours are available from the resort featuring treks through the stunning local countryside away from the tourist crowds.

Village Trekking: Our location in a traditional mountain village above the sacred Ayung River lends itself to a series of scenic and cultural treks. Our organised tours include a knowledgeable guide.

Tours of the surrounding area can be arranged from our leisure concierge. They include trips to the mountain village of Kintamani, the spectacular rice terraces at Tegalalang, the natural springs at Tampaksiring, Ubud’s galleries, museums and souvenir shops, and the village of Petulu, home to a large flock of white egrets.

Mountain Biking: The resort has its own 18-speed mountain bikes for guests to explore the surrounding countryside alone or on specially-arranged tours with experienced adventure guides.

  • how this holiday makes a difference
In order to provide our guests with a Balinese experience in terms of culture, environment and ambience, management recognises the need to work in harmony with the local community.

We demonstrate this through achieving recognition with the Bali Tri Hita Karana Awards which promote a balanced relationship between fellow human beings, their God and the environment and through adopting the Green Globe 21 approach to sustainable tourism. To promote our community relationship we commit to select the majority of our employee’s from the local area and region of Gianyar regency. Over 85% of our staff are from local villages.

We utilise fresh local products and services from local suppliers with a preference to those from profit sharing co-operatives organisations and surrounding villages.

It is our commitment to measure our greenhouse gas emissions, energy and fresh water usage, waste water discharges, minimize our solid waste and set targets etc., in all areas to improve our environmental performance through benchmarking with Green Globe 21 every year and to comply with the relevant environmental public and occupational health and safety, hygiene and employment legislation and other requirements of Indonesia to which we are obliged to adhere. Our environmental practices are as per Green Globe 21 requirements including creation of 100% recycled water treatment system in the form of a waste water garden so no effluent is sent into polluting local river and waterways.

We use energy saving light bulbs, encourage recycling and reduced packaging with suppliers and encourage our guests to reuse linen and use bicycles instead of cars for transport. We also offer our guests walking tours and bird watching experiences to appreciate local flora and fauna.

We are very proud to support the East Bali Poverty Project where we are currently working towards providing a sustainable nutrition and education programme for a remote village nestled in the slopes of Mt Abang in northern East Bali called Jatituhu. With the guidance of David Booth (MBE) we and our guests we have been able to make a difference to these children’s lives and offer a future less bleak.

We participate in clean up the world weekend every September combining hotel staff, schools, restaurants, other hotels, environment organisations in local tourism area. We also co-ordinate the presentation of Is it really rubbish play to all the school children to teach about recycling.

Tourism can be good and bad for destinations & local people.

We carefully screen every holiday against our criteria for responsible travel.

'Look behind the brochure' to find how each holiday makes a difference (see left).

We don't claim to be perfect - there is no global accreditation - but we've led the way since 2001 and screened 1000's of holidays.

We invite every traveller to write a review about their experiences and responsible tourism.

This valuable feedback is sent to the people who run the holidays. We keep a very close eye on it and take off holidays that don't live up to our standards.
