description
This hotel in Brighton has rather gone its own way. Eclectic, rather than boutique, a ‘green’ town house forging its own direction.
Famous for being environmentally friendly this is best sampled through the delicious breakfasts, prepared with mainly organic produce or sourced where ever possible from local farms. Whilst this is now a fashionable claim to be making it is notable that this hotel has been practising this for the last twelve years.
The Art Deco breakfast room has a menu of celebrated choice; including a variety of imaginative vegetarian and vegan dishes, three fishy dishes and some intriguing signature dishes. The cleaning materials are mostly ecologically friendly and the light bulbs are not only low energy but some are now coming up for their eighth year.
It is now common for hotels to claim environmental reasons for by asking people not to put their towels in for washing each day. Here, we wash our towels with soap nut shells making a real contribution to the environment both by using natural produce and much less chemical waste.
All the soaps and goodies in the rooms are guaranteed not tested on animals and the soap itself is so environmentally friendly that it is recommended by the Vegetarian Society, Vegan Society and VIVA. Although it is only a small hotel, one of several hundred in Brighton and Hove it has still obtained recognition and became the Times hotel of the week with its reputation spreading all over England.

rooms, food and facilities
From the individually designed rooms, some with four poster beds, to the fresh flowers on your table in the tastefully appointed art deco breakfast room, you will find your every need anticipated and fulfilled. Most rooms have an iron, ironing board, trouser press and hair-dryer.
Disabled access: We were the first to be DDA audited and comply with all the current regulations. It is notable that as a regency building over six floors we are not easily used by guests in wheelchairs.
Cycling & walking friendly: Brighton is a walking and cycling City. We offer bike hire and provide walking schedules for not only Brighton and the National Park area nearby but the whole of Sussex.
Pet friendly: We are a pet friendly hotel as long as the pets are friendly and quiet.
how to find us
If you arrive by train and have heavy cases walk down to the sea front turn left there and walk for 15 minutes keeping the fine regency buildings on your immediate left and the sea on your right. Charlotte St in then on your left and you will find the hotel half way up, about 70 metres.
You will arrive feeling grumpy and exhausted after lumping your case all that way. But of course virtuous that no air miles have been registered and your tired feet have no carbon attached. But never mind our cheerful receptionist will point out your room is only on the thirds floor and that a taxi would have only taken 5 minutes and cost £3.50.
Car drivers will have used their SAT NAV or found the location on our website.
how this holiday makes a difference
|
We have practiced being a green and ecologically sound hotel for the last dozen years. It uses predominantly, although not exclusively ecologically sound washing and cleaning materials the soaps and cosmetics in the rooms are organic and not only not tested on animals but also suitable for Vegans.
We have used low energy lighting, recycling and water conservation practices for many years. When the world woke up to the imperative need for conservation about 10 years ago we were the first to be audited by the then government funded conservation group. The biggest energy cost in a hotel is of course heating. We have initiated our own scheme of using 4 instead of one boiler, in order to profile the heating demand to the lowest consumption of energy. All our radiators are thermostatically controlled and most of our lights low energy. We use predomatily local suppliers, local food and organic food. Even our Hotel Laundry is local (it may not be obvious but many hotels often have a collection and delivery service that locates the laundry over 100 miles away). We use fair-trade products where possible especially in the guest rooms and for the tea and coffee in the breakfast room. Responsibility towards one’s staff is easy to claim but not always easy to measure. As we approach the month end it is notable that the payroll today has the complete staff list having been with us averaging over seven years each. |
Tourism can be good and bad for destinations & local people. We carefully screen every holiday against our criteria for responsible travel. 'Look behind the brochure' to find how each holiday makes a difference (see left). We don't claim to be perfect - there is no global accreditation - but we've lead the way since 2001 and screened 1000's of holidays. We invite every traveller to write a review about their experiences and responsible tourism. This valuable feedback is sent to the people who run the holidays. We keep a very close eye on it and take off holidays that don't live up to our standards. |
