Rye bed and breakfast

This is a small family-run eco-friendly B&B in the ancient town of Rye, located in a beautiful 18th-century town house. Visitors can enjoy home cooking using organic local produce while gazing out at panoramic views across the Romney Marsh, especially interesting during the lambing season.

Rye is one of the ancient Cinque Ports that once formed the heart of the British naval and commercial shipping fleets. While the sea has retreated over the last few hundred years, Rye has retained its traditional market town features, and the surrounding area has developed a strong reputation for organic farming.

No visit to Rye would be complete without a tour of the cobbled streets around Church Square and Mermaid Street. With its position on the High Street, this B&B is perfectly situated for visitors to stroll around the attractions of the town and also sample one of the many independent shops that throng the streets. As well as paying careful attention to natural wholesome food, we use green cleaning products in the kitchen, home laundry and rooms. We also think recycling is very important and participate in community trade waste recycling schemes for both glass and cardboard.

how this holiday makes a difference
All of our staff live locally and most walk or catch the bus to work. Most of the produce we cook with is local - especially bacon, eggs, sausages, salad leaves, potatoes, tomatoes - and much is bought directly from the farms. All guests are given information about local shops, restaurants, attractions, walks and cycle routes/hire facilities.

We use energy efficient lights are used wherever possible. Spare water is recycled for use in the garden and our toilets have half-flush settings. The planting on our terrace is grown to organic principles. All cleaning materials (except commercial dishwasher fluids) are Ecover plant extract products.

We recycle cardboard and glass and we compost all kitchen waste than is appropriate. Many of our water bottles are compostable corn-starch containers and our take-away cartons are corn-starch or pressed wood. We encourage honeybees on our terrace and guests receive an eco information sheet in their rooms.

Tourism can be good and bad for destinations & local people.

We carefully screen every holiday against our criteria for responsible travel.

We invite every traveller to write a review about their experiences and responsible tourism.

This valuable feedback is sent to the people who run the holidays. We keep a very close eye on it and take off holidays that don't live up to our standards.
