description
This is a traditional Argentina estancia and exclusive working ranch, declared World Biosphere Reserve by UNESCO.

It is a unique and ideal place for three different types of tourists: horseback riders, birdwatchers and those who seek a bit of history and culture.

You can learn how to make a typical “Asado” and other traditional Argentine dishes. Learn to ride as a “gaucho” and all about their equestrian culture. Gauchos treat their horses with a lot of respect and as a part of their life.

There is a capybara colony growing more and more every year (we now have a little one in the main house, as a pet). You will enjoy spectacular and varied landscapes: from the “pampa” to sand dunes, crab grounds, the shore of the Río de la Plata and lots of “Tala” woods, Eucalyptus, etc.

The accommodation is located at the north of the Samborombón Bay, the outer limit of the Rio de la Plata, where geography and habitat combine to create a site chosen by many species of migratory birds. Estuarine waters and the muddy bottom of the Samborombón Bay offer rich feeding for birds because of the abundance of invertebrates and larval stages of juvenile forms of fish. It is an obligatory stop to the birds that migrate from Canada to Patagonia. There is a very rich flora and fauna environment. More than 150 species of birds live in their natural habitat. It is possible to admire the large variety of wild life that includes axis deer, wild boars, capybaras, foxes, skunks, herons, partridges, ostriches and hares.

We have a large library with 19th century history and travel books in Spanish, English, French and German, 3-D color Lumiere “plaques litographiques” and pre-Columbian pieces from the collection the family donated to the La Plata Museum some years ago.

Our goal is that you feel as if you were part of the family, part of the estancia.

  • how this holiday makes a difference
All the staff at our Argentina estancia are from the local area. Maintenance of the Estancia is carried out by people from the local community: bricklayers, plumbers, millers, woodcutters, mechanics, etc. Food is purchased in stores nearby (especially meat, vegetables, cheese, mushrooms, and marmalades). Cheese and marmalades are manufactured by local people. Honey is produced in the estancia.

The ranch forms part of one of UNESCO’s World Biosphere Reserves. Flora and fauna are preserved and no harmful activities are allowed such as tree felling, hunting or lighting fires. Nature is always protected. Cattle are fed by natural grass, and animals live all over the fields. Honey is made by our own bees.

Wood used for fireplaces and barbecues is taken from fallen trees, in order to avoid damaging the forests. Solar energy is used in some houses. The main house does not have electricity. Energy is provided by a generator. Guests are requested to minimise the use of electricity, turning off the lights and closing the doors in winter for more efficient heating.

Argentina estancia, horse ridingGuests are requested to use the shower instead of the bathtub. Towels and sheets are changed every 3/5 days, or upon request. There’s a sign on bathrooms warning people of the need to save water, and to minimise the use of detergents when doing laundry.

Each gaucho, once they start their own family, is given a house. Their children (and children from other farms) attend the rural school of the Estancia, and in this way it is possible for them to have a good education. The building was lent by the Muniz Barreto family (of the Estancia) to replace the old one on Route 11 which was constantly vandalized. The Estancia also contributes to some expenses. Every day, the teacher picks up other students from neighboring farms and then takes them back home.

Gauchos are trained in all rural activities, even modern ones such as artificial insemination. Shells are taken from many of the quarries of the Estancia to improve the roads to the town and facilities nearby. We give guests information about local attractions & services. Guests get a deep insight into the “Gaucho” culture: their way of life, behavior, thoughts and daily activities.

Tourism can be good and bad for destinations & local people.

We carefully screen every holiday against our criteria for responsible travel.

'Look behind the brochure' to find how each holiday makes a difference (see left).

We don't claim to be perfect - there is no global accreditation - but we've led the way since 2001 and screened 1000's of holidays.

We invite every traveller to write a review about their experiences and responsible tourism.

This valuable feedback is sent to the people who run the holidays. We keep a very close eye on it and take off holidays that don't live up to our standards.
