travellers' tales
Home from home accommodation with beautiful views, where our 6 and 3 year old could explore Godshill farm freely, safely and meet new friends also staying on the farm. To hear the Animals in the morning in the surrounding fields make it a special and exciting way for children to start the day. (more)
rooms, food and facilities
The farm's location in an AONB (Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty) which makes it ideal for families and those seeking total peace and relaxation. The farm achieved organic status about 10 years ago which has increased its appeal. The bridleway running through the farm was used by Queen Victoria's carriage when she visited the neighbouring Appuldurcombe Estate.
We have 3 self-catering properties.
Pheasant Cottage - Sleeps 4/5 in 2 bedrooms.
The cottage looks out across the orchard to the nearby millpond, which has an abundance of waterfowl and the downs beyond. Godshill church can also be seen in the opposite direction. The accommodation is comfortable and well equipped, it has central heating, free provision of linen and children are welcome. The sitting room has a large bay window and colour television/dvd. There is a dining area and fully fitted modern kitchen with an electric cooker and hob, microwave, refrigerator, washing machine and tumble dryer. The modern bathroom has a bath with shower over. Upstairs bedrooms comprise one twin and one double. A cot or camp bed can be provided if necessary.
Lake View - Sleeps 6-7
This newly furbished wing of the house provides spacious accommodation all on one level. It accommodates 6 people in 2 bedrooms (which can be configured as twin or double) and on the comfortable sofa bed in the lounge area.
The open plan sitting/dining room leads through french windows onto the south facing terrace which looks out over the garden to the millpond and the woods and farmland which stretch up to the downs.
Godshill Park Cottage - Sleeps 4-5 in 2 bedrooms
This detached 2 bedroom cottage is a secluded, luxury retreat. The house is furnished traditionally and has central heating. Four adults can be accommodated in two double upstairs bedrooms one of which can be a twin or double as required. For guests with mobility problems a bed can be provided on the ground floor with sufficient notice. There is a bathroom upstairs with bath and downstairs a shower room, basin & wc. The fitted kitchen is fully equipped with utensils, an electric cooker, microwave, fridge freezer, dishwasher and washer drier. There is a comfortable lounge and separate dining room together with a south facing conservatory. French windows open into the garden where there is seating for al fresco dining. Beds are made up with fine linen and towels can be provided on request. Facilities include dvd player and tv. A cot or camp bed is also available with prior notice.
Disabled access: Lake view is all on one level (no stairs). Park Cottage has a downstairs shower room and a bed could be provided downstairs. Nowhere is specifically designed for wheelchairs but persons with limited mobility may find the accommodation suitable. Specific provision for disabilities can be discussed at time of booking and we're happy to help where we can. Service dogs are welcome.
Family/baby friendly: Families stay here regularly and return – the things children most enjoy are playing with our 3 dogs, swinging on the rope swing which is made out of a recycled airplane tyre, collecting eggs from the chickens, petting the 4 miniature Shetland ponies, fishing in the lake. We can provide a cot and high chair with prior notice.
Pet friendly: We accept dogs (other than service animals) in Pheasant only – this avoids too many dogs on site as we have 3 and our neighbours have 2 – all are friendly and love children.
Cycling & walking friendly: There are facilities if you wish to bring your own horse or bicycle and drying facilities for walkers. Maps and walking/cycling guides are available.
By rail: The train runs from Ryde Pier to Shanklin from where we can collect you, you can catch a bus or take a taxi to the house.
Passenger ferries: Passenger ferries run regularly from Lymington to Yarmouth, Southampton to Cowes and Portsmouth to Ryde.
By bus: The number 3 bus from Newport or Shanklin will bring you to the bottom of our drive.

Environment:
The farm and garden are organic and the farmland is entered into environmental stewardship schemes which mean extensive grazing by cattle and sheep, no fertilizers or pesticides are used and bee & butterfly nectar rich grasses are planted. Our woodlands host bats, dormice and red squirrels which are European Protected Species. All wildlife is encouraged with foxes and badgers often seen. Only native plants are used and the grounds are not manicured therefore watering is kept to a minimum. All glass, paper and food waste is recycled/composted and guests are encouraged to do the same. Water saving bags are fitted in the toilets to minimise water used for flushing. We have a green island gold award and a copy of our environmental policy is provided for each unit. The cost of ferry travel for foot passengers is refunded. Community: There are several footpaths which cross our organic farmland and these are well used by locals and visitors including local school children visiting the farm. A local part time seasonal cleaner is employed. Toiletries provided for guests are produced on the island from locally grown lavender, cakes are also locally made, all services used are local trades people. Guests are encouraged to recycle and make a donation to Gift to Nature. We work closely with Godshill Organics. They stock our beef and lamb in their shop when available and it's from there I normally buy cakes for guests' arrival. Guests are encouraged to shop at Godshill Organics and also the weekly Farmers' Market. |
Tourism can be good and bad for destinations & local people. We carefully screen every holiday against our criteria for responsible travel. 'Look behind the brochure' to find how each holiday makes a difference (see left). We don't claim to be perfect - there is no global accreditation - but we've led the way since 2001 and screened 1000's of holidays. We invite every traveller to write a review about their experiences and responsible tourism. This valuable feedback is sent to the people who run the holidays. We keep a very close eye on it and take off holidays that don't live up to our standards. |
