description
This is a family run five star rated “restaurant with rooms” located in the cheerful village of Kingussie within the stunning Cairngorm National Park, surrounded by mountains, rivers and lochs. Situated in four acres of riverside grounds - with an abundance of native trees, flowers and wildlife – the B&B combines quality with simplicity and good food with a warm welcome. Built as a water powered tweed mill in the late 1800s the accommodation maintains the character and some of the original features of the mill.

Champagne is served on the terrace in the summer – and drams in a cosy lounge in winter. Dinners are served by an open fire in the stone walled and wood beamed restaurant. Menus feature carefully prepared fresh and seasonal produce and the wine list is one of the best in the UK.

There are eight comfortable bedrooms, all with king, twin or canopied beds and spacious en-suite bathrooms including some with separate showers. Each room has controllable heating – and in half you can nod off to the sound of the bubbling river below. There are two comfortable lounges in which to relax and unwind – with games and books aplenty – and a plethora of local information and suggestions for walks and excursions.

Breakfasts include freshly squeezed juice, baked croissants and hot dishes such as kedgeree, local estate venison sauasges, or local black pudding with Scottish “pancetta” and organic highland eggs.

how this holiday makes a difference
In the restaurant we make the best possible use of local seasonal produce and where we can we buy produce that has been grown or reared by organic methods. A number of the wines on our list are organic or bio-dynamic. We locally sourced produce where possible including game from local estates, Highland beef, Shetland lamb, prime fish from Scrabster, and shellfish from Skye. Wild mushrooms are picked locally, soft fruits from Alvie Estate and cheeses come from Mull and Galloway.

Reindeer, B&B in Cairngorms national parkBehind the scenes we reuse and recycle a wide variety of items including paper, card, plastics, printer cartridges, and even bread (for local ducks!). We use as many recycled materials as are affordable and appropriate. As well as recycling used materials, we are working hard to cut down energy and water usage. For example, low energy lighting is being installed in as many fittings as possible and bedroom televisions are switched off when your room is serviced. We encourage you to take away with you any unfinished Arran Aromatics toiletries so that we can reduce wastage.

Much of the grounds have been left to grow into wild areas to encourage local wildlife such as roe deer, squirrels, hedgehogs, frogs, butterflies, and a large range of bird species. We ask guests to leave them in the bath or on the floor if they would like them changed.

Tourism can be good and bad for destinations & local people.

We carefully screen every holiday against our criteria for responsible travel.

'Look behind the brochure' to find how each holiday makes a difference (see left).

We don't claim to be perfect - there is no global accreditation - but we've led the way since 2001 and screened 1000's of holidays.

We invite every traveller to write a review about their experiences and responsible tourism.

This valuable feedback is sent to the people who run the holidays. We keep a very close eye on it and take off holidays that don't live up to our standards.
