Totland accommodation on the Isle of Wight

Our house, set in an acre of secluded grounds, is beautifully situated amidst National Trust downland. Nestling beneath Tennyson Down, not far from the magnificent cliffs, the guest house has splendid country and Solent views. This is one of the most westerly located guest houses on the Isle of Wight, set in the countryside alongside Tennyson Down, with fantastic views of The Solent, Headon Warren and Afton Downs. The Needles at Alum Bay are located within two kilometres, with the beaches of Totland Bay and Freshwater Bay within three kilometres.

The guest house is surrounded by footpaths enabling ramblers to keep off the roads and appreciate the local countryside with magnificent views. For that feeling of being on top of the world, try the walk across the Downs to the tip of the headland for breathtaking views of the Needles and the sweep of the Dorset coastline. Not far away is the town of Yarmouth and the river Yar with plenty of birds to keep ornithologists happy. In the spring and summer the flowers are a delight to see as are the butterflies.

We offer a traditional English breakfast, but of course you may order a light Continental breakfast if you prefer. In the evenings you can relax in our comfortable lounge and watch your favourite TV programmes if conversation runs short! You may of course like to take a short stroll and explore our acre of grounds around the house or just relax on the terrace.

how this holiday makes a difference
We have solar panels on the roof to help provide hot water, and all walls and roof spaces are insulated where possible and windows and doors are double-glazed. We use energy efficient light bulbs or dimmer switches and ask guests to switch off lights, TV’s and other electrical goods and not to leave them on stand-by. Toilets are dual flush.

We have four water butts strategically placed to catch most of the rainwater and these are used to water the garden where necessary All kitchen waste is composted either in the normal compost heap or meat fish and bones in our green cone. All other waste is separated into metal, paper, glass, material or plastics and disposed of accordingly.

Surrounding countryside, Guest house in TotlandWe support local charities such as the Gift for Nature, which improves habitat for the wildlife on the island, and Freshwater Inshore Lifeboat. Also we raise money for Headway a charity which provides support for people with brain injury through accident or illness, and MacMillan Nurses. We source furniture from local craftsmen, and try and use independent local shops to supply our needs where possible. We employ local plumber/builder for maintenance of the property. Our local supermarket now supplies local produce so where possible we use local produce and encourage our guests to do the same.

We support the local community by acting as tree wardens for the Totland area and Chris is Treasurer of the local chamber of commerce and tourism. We tell our guests about both the local and national charities we support and send donations annually. We have details of all local attractions on the Island but in particular we offer our guests a local walking map and ask them to contribute towards the charities we support in return for the map. We also advise guests that the local open deck tour bus goes past the end of our drive and that they can hope on and off this and visit all the local attractions without having to take the car. We encourage people to try our local pub as they source much of their menu locally. We also source our produce locally and make jams and marmalades as well as flapjacks and cakes ourselves, and Chris's makes his own homemade ice cream.

Tourism can be good and bad for destinations & local people.

We carefully screen every holiday against our criteria for responsible travel.

'Look behind the brochure' to find how each holiday makes a difference (see left).

We don't claim to be perfect - there is no global accreditation - but we've led the way since 2001 and screened 1000's of holidays.

We invite every traveller to write a review about their experiences and responsible tourism.

This valuable feedback is sent to the people who run the holidays. We keep a very close eye on it and take off holidays that don't live up to our standards.
