description
A perfectly secluded hideaway with fabulous misty mornings and sunset views over the Vale of Avalon and Wearyall Hill. Tucked away off Bove Town, this lovely self-catering house is only minutes on foot from the High St, the Tor and Chalice Well. Ideal for a relaxing retreat or as a base for exploring the town and further afield.

In the early 20th Century, the house was the Cook’s Cottage attached to “Mount Avalon” - once the home of Rutland Boughton, composer of the famous opera, The Immortal Hour. Sadly, this impressive Victorian mansion burnt to the ground about 10 years ago but the strip of six workers’ cottages has been preserved.

how this holiday makes a difference
We use environmentally safe cleaning materials as much as possible, provide bins for recycling and composting (and strongly encourage our guests to use them). The house is powered with green electricity and we use low-energy bulbs wherever we can.

We recommend shopping in the High Street, especially for local food to reduce food miles; we supply our visitors with information on walks to reduce car use and also provide safe storage for bicycles.

By staying with us, you are actually supporting financially a whole array of community projects. Both owners choose to give a great deal of their time in coordinating the Transition Town Glastonbury project on a voluntary basis. The project is a a grassroots community wide initiative to re-localise our town, rebuild community resilience and reduce our carbon footprint.

We furnish our guests with leaflets on local activities, places of interest, workshops, conferences and events, thereby ensuring they contribute to the local economy. We employ one part-time local cleaner and all our contractors for garden maintenance, plumbing, electrical repairs etc. are all small local firms.

The garden is small, organic and kept very simple. It is visited by many species of birds and the dawn chorus in early summer is truly lovely.

Tourism can be good and bad for destinations & local people.

We carefully screen every holiday against our criteria for responsible travel.

'Look behind the brochure' to find how each holiday makes a difference (see left).

We don't claim to be perfect - there is no global accreditation - but we've led the way since 2001 and screened 1000's of holidays.

We invite every traveller to write a review about their experiences and responsible tourism.

This valuable feedback is sent to the people who run the holidays. We keep a very close eye on it and take off holidays that don't live up to our standards.
