Wooler bed & breakfast accommodation, Northumberland
This former Northumberland hunting lodge is now bed and breakfast accommodation owned and operated by Mike and Beth. Set in an enviable position in tranquil Wooler, Northumberland, overlooking the picturesque area of Glendale and nestling close to the Cheviot hills it provides peaceful and relaxing bed and breakfast accommodation with a touch of style and luxury. Our Wooler bed & breakfast accommodation is central for exploring Northumberland, the Scottish Borders and even Edinburgh or Newcastle, only 60-70 miles away.
The house was built around the 1860’s as part of the estate of Middleton Hall and was said to have been used as a hunting lodge. It was lived in for over 90 years by Captain Humphrey Simpson and retains many of its original features. Porticoed entrance with tiled hallway, wide Georgian style doors leading to spacious lounge and dining rooms, both with open fires and bay windows in which to sit and contemplate the views
The 3 en-suite bedrooms, are again spacious, with original fireplaces, sash windows and all the accommodation is on ground level. They are decorated in individual period styles but with all the mod cons of en-suites, some with bath with shower over, tea and coffee making facilities, televisions, hairdryers, a selection of toiletries and of course central heating - something not around when the house was built! Take time out from sight seeing, sit for a while and just enjoy our garden, about 1 acre of lawns and terraces and another of woodland, with views over the surrounding Northumberland countryside. If you come in the right season, help yourself to an apple, pear or plum to munch on.
Walking: We are in an ideal position for many local walks, from easy, circular strolls, to the more strenuous assaults on the Cheviots - many of which can be started and finished at here. And don’t forget, if you do fall in a stream and get wet while out walking, let us dry off your boots and clothes ready for your next trip.

rooms, food and facilities
The en-suite bedrooms at Wooler bed & breakfast accommodation are spacious, with original fireplaces and are named after the views, wildlife or 'house characters' and are all on ground level. They are decorated in a period style but with a modern slant and we have a selection of doubles (with king size beds, some antique- just the beds, not the mattresses!) and a twin room, again with period beds.
The en-suites are a selection of bath with shower over, again, one with period suite, or shower, with a range of toiletries and fluffy towels.
The rooms themselves benefit from central heating, with thermostatic valves, so you can adjust them for your comfort, televisions, hairdryers and beverage trays with a selection of tea, fruit and leaf, coffee, hot chocolate, biscuits and fresh milk. Disabled access: Our Wooler bed & breakfast accommodation is all on the ground floor; however, the corridors are unfortunately too narrow to accommodate wheelchairs.

how this holiday makes a difference
|
At Wooler bed & breakfast accommodation we use low energy light bulbs where lights are going to be left on for any length of time and we try not to leave electrical appliances on standby. Mike and I try to only boil the necessary amount of water in kettles and again, only use the washing machines and dishwasher on full loads. We clean, where appropriate, using environmentally friendly products and in some instances have gone back to the 'old' methods. We re-cycle as much as possible. Berwick Council have now made this a lot easier for us as they have provided a blue re-cycling bin. We still take glass bottles to the bottle banks in Wooler. We try to encourage guests to have a car free day if they are here for any length of time, there is a local cycle hire shop, or just to walk into Wooler or the hills.
We support the Northumberland Wildlife Trust and have put in place measures in our own garden to help wildlife. At Wooler bed & breakfast accommodation there are quite a number of bird nesting boxes in our woods, we have a couple of feeding stations and we leave seed heads on plants until we do our spring tidy. You will also find log and brash piles in the woods - good hiding places for all sorts of things. You will find ladybird towers around the garden in the borders and hopefully lacewing and bee sanctuaries will be added before too long. We try to garden without the use of chemicals and in the main, succeed. The garden is also visited by Red Squirrels, so we have three feeding boxes just for them and a new addition this year, two nest boxes. Mike now tries to cut the hedges out of the breeding season and I am looking at an area for wild flowers and a natural wet land using the run off from the house. To try to minimise movement of goods and to support the local community, we source locally where possible at Wooler bed & breakfast accommodation. Local produce is used in our breakfast. Our soap is handmade locally from natural, quality ingredients and we are looking at other handmade toiletry products that we can use. We are also looking at a variety of local crafts that we can offer for sale to help support artists in business. |
Tourism can be good and bad for destinations & local people. We carefully screen every holiday against our criteria for responsible travel. 'Look behind the brochure' to find how each holiday makes a difference (see left). We don't claim to be perfect - there is no global accreditation - but we've led the way since 2001 and screened 1000's of holidays. We invite every traveller to write a review about their experiences and responsible tourism. This valuable feedback is sent to the people who run the holidays. We keep a very close eye on it and take off holidays that don't live up to our standards. |
