description
This charming two bedroom cottage forms part of a lovely old house, which was built around 1830 by the Duke of Montrose for his Buchanan estates. The cottage was created from the original smithy workshops; local tradesmen used sheep’s wool for insulation and reclaimed materials wherever possible. We are committed to providing outstanding accommodation while leaving the smallest possible footprint; the cottage holds the GTBS Bronze award, and we are continually striving to improve our ‘green’ credentials.

Situated on the threshold of the Loch Lomond and Trossachs National Park with lovely views of the Campsie Fells and the surrounding fields and woods, the cottage offers a wonderful place from which to explore one of the world’s most beautiful landscapes.

We are located only a few miles from the world famous 'Bonnie Banks' of Loch Lomond, and is equally close to Rob Roy Macgregor's Trossachs homeland; Stirling and Glasgow are a half hour drive away, Edinburgh and Perth one hour, and much of Argyll, Perthshire, Ayrshire and South East Scotland are accessible in less than two hours. For those who do not wish to venture too far there are many wonderful scenic drives, walks and attractions close to the cottage. We supply extensive information on local activities for guests, including detailed guides to walks and cycle routes for all ages and abilities.

The cottage sleeps up to four, with accommodation on one level, private parking and secure storage for bikes. A cot is also available. Prices are inclusive of power, hot water, towels and linen, and guests are supplied with a selection of home-made, local and Fair Trade provisions. We are non-smoking and we do not take pets.

  • how this holiday makes a difference
We have been awarded the Bronze Green Tourism Business Scheme Award. We use low energy light bulbs, recycle and compost our waste. We use water butts to collect rain water and have wildlife areas in the garden.

There is a bus service to and from Glasgow from the cottage and we have cycle storage. We use eco-friendly washing up & laundry liquid and recycled toilet paper & kitchen towels.

Provisions are purchased from the local farm shop and raspberries for our jam are grown nearby. Guests are encouraged to shop in the nearby villages, and we provide extensive information on local activities, pubs, restaurants and places of interest.

The cottage was created from the property’s original smithy workshops. Local craftsmen used reclaimed or local materials wherever possible, and the cottage is insulated with sheep’s wool. A proportion of the linen and towels supplied are purchased from a Fair Trade supplier, and any replacements are sourced in the same way. Provisions provided for guests are home made, locally produced or Fair Trade. Local tradesmen are employed for maintenance and improvements.

Tourism can be good and bad for destinations & local people.
