Dumfries self catering accommodation
Our cottages are part of a traditional farm in a secluded valley surrounded by forests and hills.

A haven of peace in South West Scotland just ten miles north of Dumfries. There are streams, fields, hills, ponds, bike tracks and bridleways on the doorstep. The wildlife is diverse and both farm and cottages are environmentally friendly. Dogs, cats, children and horses are very welcome and invariably have a great time ... often with our dogs, cats, children and horses.

The farm attracts all sorts, but the common thread is a love of the countryside and the peace and quiet. Some enjoy it by tearing around mountains on bikes and splashing down rivers in canoes, the more temperate might enjoy a leisurely walk or a pony ride and others just like to sit, watch the birds and absorb the ambiance.

Mountain bikers come for the 20km track that passes on the hill behind as well as others at nearby Drumlanrig, Mabie and Dalbeattie. A drying room, pressure washer and bike lock-up is available for their use. Canoeists also love the drying room. Cold wetsuits are not a good start to the day.

Walkers and birders also access the hills and paths from the back of the farm. The mature stands of lichen covered fir and spruce have a rich under story of ferns, fungus and wild flowers. In spring the ditches are thick with tadpoles and newts and deer, red squirrel, crossbill and goshawk are occasionally glimpsed throughout the year. Buzzard, kestrel, sparrow hawk, owl, woodpecker, siskin, jay and raven are common sights.

A short drive South is the main centre of Dumfries with all mod cons, to the North West is the couthy market town of Thornhill which is more oldie worldie, and in the N. East lies bustling Moffat with all the usual tartan souvenirs. Edinburgh, Glasgow and Stranrar are just 90 minutes to the North and West, but there is much to see and do in Dumfries and Galloway.

how this holiday makes a difference
We have achieved the top Gold Award from the Green Tourist Business Scheme for our activities. The cottages minimise energy use by being well insulated and centrally heated, by using solar gain and low energy bulbs and appliances. We have also planted thousands of trees and hundreds of meters of hedges and hope to do more to become carbon neutral.

Waste bins for recycling metal, glass, paper and compost are provided. Water use is minimised with low volume cisterns (pond water flushes some of them). Water is stored in ponds and butts and our septic tank soaks away naturally into a field. Solids are spread just like any other manure.

Farm, self catering accommodation in DumfriesThe farm is managed to increase the diversity of the wildlife it supports: flowers are left to seed, grass is not topped until ground nesters have fledged, hedges are only trimmed in winter, crops are sown to provide food and cover and our riverbanks and ponds are left un-grazed to benefit invertebrate and aquatic life. Our cattle and ponies are extensively farmed and kept happy and healthy with a minimal use of medicine. The sward is species rich and any use of herbicides is limited to the spot weeding of bracken, docks and nettles. A farm explanatory pack introduces visitors to what we are doing and raises awareness of how farms can contribute to the countryside.

Dumfries and Galloway depends hugely on tourism for its income. While your visit helps us to continue to nurture and protect our little corner, it also sustains the many historical, artistic, recreational and public services we all need. We encourage our guests to visit local attractions, eat in local restaurants and buy local produce. We use local services for the maintenance of the property.

Tourism can be good and bad for destinations & local people.

We carefully screen every holiday against our criteria for responsible travel.

'Look behind the brochure' to find how each holiday makes a difference (see left).

We don't claim to be perfect - there is no global accreditation - but we've led the way since 2001 and screened 1000's of holidays.

We invite every traveller to write a review about their experiences and responsible tourism.

This valuable feedback is sent to the people who run the holidays. We keep a very close eye on it and take off holidays that don't live up to our standards.
