West Devon accommodation, B&B on organic farm

The farm is in the heart of Devon, ideally located for touring Devon’s beauty spots. We are situated approximately 3 miles from the market town of Hatherleigh. We have the Tarka Trail running through our farmyard, consisting 180 miles in all. The village of Iddesleigh is one mile from our home and has an excellent 5th century public house and restaurant called the Duke of York, which has won a national award for its good food. You can have a three course meal in the dining room or alternatively you can have a bar snack, using local produce.

The breakfast is a traditional aga grilled farmhouse breakfast where we use local produce as much as possible, local honey from Hatherleigh, homemade preserves and apple juice. We cater for vegetarians and other diets with advance notice and eggs are produced from our own hens. We also have a small flock of organic sheep on the farm and miniature ponies, two working collie dogs and four friendly cats. We have a non-smoking policy and a safe parking area.
special things to do and see here
Our central position makes it an ideal location from which to explore this area of Devon and whichever direction you take, within a hour you can visit the historic city of Exeter. The Eden Project (approx. 1¼ hours away) is the world’s largest collection of plant life from around the world housed under 3 gigantic biospheres.

There is ample game and course fishing on lakes at Stafford Moor etc. There is a choice of heated indoor swimming pools nearby as well as a tidal saltwater pool at Bude. There are numerous beaches on north Devon dramatic coastline which are great for surfing too. The area also boasts a number of excellent golf courses and horse riding facilities. A short drive will take you to the beautiful RHS Rosemoor Gardens at Torrington, where you can visit the 1646 Heritage Centre and also The Dartington Glass Factory which has a visitor centre. From Theme Parks to Art Centres and Abbeys, there is something for everyone.
travellers' tales
The highlights were the warm welcome, wonderful cream tea on arrival. Very child friendly - Rose went out of her way to find books and puzzles for the children to play with. (more)

how this holiday makes a difference
We have an organic dairy farm which is certified by the Soil Association. We cultivate our walled vegetable garden without the use of pesticides and fertilisers, and give surpluses to guests. We recycle plastic, paper, tin, cardboard and glass which is collected and the general farm waste is taken to a recycling centre. We collect rainwater from the farm building and recycle it for farm use. We have two ponds on the farm which attract all sorts of wildlife. We have a farm trail which is guided by nine granite rollers which takes you along a small stream and a bluebell wood (about ¾ mile long, an information sheet is provided). We also have 400m stretch of fishing on the River Torridge, which is an idyllic spot. You might even spot otters or kingfishers. The BBC’s Springwatch series was filmed half a mile upstream. We have a laundry scheme where we change towels and sheets after 4 – 7 days or when guests request them. We use green/ biodegradable/ eco products such as ecover in the property.

We use local meats from our local butcher who provides the bacon and sausage. Our local inn provides local meats, vegetables and fish. We use local services such as builders, electricians and plumbers for the maintenance and employ one person full time to help with milking the cows. We are involved in a local charity ‘Farms for City Children’ which gives inner city children an opportunity to experience country life on a farm. They learn how to care for the animals, watch the cows being milked, help feed the baby calves, clean out sheds etc. These children stay at Nethercott house nearby which was started up by Michael Morpurgo (a popular children’s author) and his wife 30 years ago.

Cow, B&B on a farm in DevonWe support the local community by encouraging guests to visit local attractions, such as RHS Rosemoor Gardens, Dartington Crystal Visitor Centre, etc (leaflets displayed on front hall table). We recommend guests to eat in our local villages where we have a great selection of eating houses and restaurants. Guests can buy produce from our local market town of Hatherleigh, where we have a pannier market held every Tuesday. There is also a local pottery and an antique shop and an antique or general furniture auction every Tuesday.
