description
2007 Silver Award winner for Best Self-catering Holiday in East Midlands. We are a working dairy farm and our accommodation offers two secluded 4 star self-catering log cabins furnished to a high standard with spacious outdoor decking; a real home from home. Near Dovedale, Chatsworth and Carsington Water, this is an idyllic base for outdoor pursuits and sightseeing. We are open all year and provide short breaks.
We try to be eco friendly and our cabins are run as sustainably as possible and we support the local environment and economy. Our aim is that whilst taking care of you, we also take care of our environment. You will find a selection of Fair Trade teas and coffee to welcome you and a supply of Ecover cleaning products.
We are situated near Carsington Water, Dovedale and Lathkill Dale. This offers an ideal base for outdoor activities, such as walking, mountain biking, riding, sailing and climbing. We provide stabling and grazing so you and your horse or pony can holiday together.

travellers' tales
The most memorable part of our holiday was the peace & tranquility and the great hospitality from the owners... Absolutely fantastic and just what we needed. (more)
rooms, food and facilities
Hipley cabin (sleeps 4) has 2 bedrooms and has been carefully designed with the less able in mind, with ramped access, level thresholds throughout, and wide doorways. Unwind in the luxury whirlpool bath, or try out the ensuite wet-room style shower, which also has full disabled toilet facilities and grab rails. A mobile shower chair and bath boards are available, and hoist hire can be arranged. Pinder cabin (sleeps 6) is slightly larger and has 2 double bedrooms, one with large ensuite shower and 1 twin bedroom. There is also a separate bathroom with whirlpool bath.
Both cabins have a well equipped open plan kitchen with dishwasher, fridge, freezer, microwave, and food processor. However if you want a break from the cooking, we can supply quality ready meals and puddings from the freezer, which are sourced and created from local produce. There is a large lounge with LCD TV with DVD and stereo, which leads directly onto the spacious outdoor decking, so you can make the most of the spectacular limestone scenery of the farm. Large enclosed garden with BBQ and fire pit so that you can sit and view the stars, and we've just had a Swedish hot tub installed! There is a selection of maps, books, games, CD’s and DVD’s.
There is no need to overload the car; all electricity, heating, bed linen, towels, toilet rolls, dishwasher tablets, cots and highchairs etc are provided for you. A real home from home.
Disabled access: Hipley cabin is rated under the National Accessibility Scheme and has been awarded Mobility Level 2, Hearing Level 1 and Visual Level 1. To provide easy access for those with limited mobility, Hipley cabin has easy access ramps, level thresholds, and adequate space to manoeuvre wheelchairs. The shower room is specifically designed as a wet room with grab rails, and an adjustable shower head with thermostatic control. All taps in this cabin are lever operated.
A mobile shower chair, bath boards and toilet seat riser are available on request and hire of a mobile hoist can be arranged. For those with visual impairments the door frames and skirting boards, door handles, and hand rails are of contrasting colours. To aid vision there is a good level of lighting throughout, including external lights. Although we do not normally allow pets we do welcome assistance dogs in our Hipley cabin, and there is ample room for them to walk and exercise, so that they too can have a holiday. For those with hearing impairments; all televisions have subtitle facilities, alarm clocks have flashing lights and vibrating modes and a portable door chime is available on request. Family & baby friendly: We welcome families with children and as a working dairy farm can offer farm tours, including watching the cows being milked, and feeding the lambs (seasonal!) and a trail – an excellent opportunity to discover the countryside and experience farming life. Both cabins are single story and are suitable for babies. We provide travel cots and highchairs at no extra cost. Please note cot bed linen is not provided.
Pets: We don't normally allow dogs or small pets, but do welcome assistance dogs in our Hipley cabin.
Walking & cycling: We provide maps and route planners of the local area, emergency first aid kit, puncture repair kits, washing facilities and secure bike storage.

how this holiday makes a difference
We are proud to be holders of both the Green Tourism Business Scheme (Gold award) and the Peak District Environmental Quality Mark awarded for our use of local produce, energy-efficiency, nature conservation and promoting environmentally-friendly business practices. Our environment is very precious, with beautiful unspoilt views, and no noise or light pollution. Ever mindful of preserving our own environment and the need to minimise pollution everywhere, we try to play our part by being eco friendly, making it easy for guests to recycle rubbish. We provide recycling containers for paper, tins, plastics, glass, and cardboard. In addition we have a compost heap for organic waste. In the kitchen you will find a range of environmentally friendly, Ecover cleaning materials and detergents. To save energy whenever practical bedlinen and towels are dried on the line outside rather than in the tumble dryer. We also use low energy light bulbs where possible and the outside lights have PIR's. Run off rain water is collected, and used for water troughs for the cows. As a working dairy farm the traditional stone buildings and dry stone walls are regularly maintained. Whilst not an organic farm we try to farm in a sensitive way that so that the wildlife can flourish along side the commercial cows. Therefore the farm is full of interesting wildlife including, great crested newts, hares, pheasants, swallows, swifts, song thrushes, owls, buzzards, hummingbird hawk moths and many more. We have wonderful meadow grasses, mosses, bluebells and wild orchids, and have developed a farm walk so that you can experience the countryside for yourselves. Where possible we buy locally and can inform guests where to buy local food and souvenirs. This includes farmers markets, local food store, local fair-trade shops and the fair-trade town of Ashbourne. We can even arrange for delivery of quality local food ready for your arrival to reduce food miles. |
Tourism can be good and bad for destinations & local people. We carefully screen every holiday against our criteria for responsible travel. 'Look behind the brochure' to find how each holiday makes a difference (see left). We don't claim to be perfect - there is no global accreditation - but we've led the way since 2001 and screened 1000's of holidays. We invite every traveller to write a review about their experiences and responsible tourism. This valuable feedback is sent to the people who run the holidays. We keep a very close eye on it and take off holidays that don't live up to our standards. |
