description
A charming self catering beach chalet, 50m from the ocean.

The beach chalet provides simple but comfortable and charming self-catering accommodation in St Lucia.

Reflecting its proximity to the ocean and reef the chalet is decorated with an interesting collection of beach finds. It is well equipped for self-catering, your choice of experimenting with the wonderful array of vegetables, fruits and fish that you can buy from Vieux Fort street markets or stores or eating out.

The chalet is situated in a small community of beach chalets, a mixture of holiday and permanent homes. Plus there are nearby small restaurants, beach cafes, bars and entertainment venues where you can enjoy local food, drink, music and entertainment.

You can swim in warm turquoise water, sheltered by the reef in the bay. Anse De Sable Beach is a 5 minute walk, where you can relax on honey coloured sand, wind and kite surf or refresh at beach cafes. Or just chill out on a shaded balcony refreshed by the Atlantic Trade Winds, listen to the sound of the ocean and gaze at stunning views of the Atlantic through coconut palms, or moons over the water.

Southern St Lucia is beautiful, if you want coconut palms on the beach rather than Hotels, this is the place for you. Vieux Fort is at the southern tip of St Lucia where the Caribbean Sea meets the Atlantic Ocean and provides the perfect position to explore both east and west coasts. St Lucia with its stunning central mountainous rain forests and coastline, charming people, towns and villages offers many opportunities for ecotourism experiences and scope for the adventurous with a variety of sports and activities.

Group bookings: Please note that the beach chalet can be booked with our self catering 1 bedroom cottage, see here.

how this holiday makes a difference
The beach chalet is a renovated already existing building and required no new development. This provides an alternative to the environmental consequences of large scale development of all-inclusive resorts or large hotels. Local trades people were employed in the renovation of the beach chalets. Materials were bought locally. Goods to furnish and equip them were bought in local shops. The chalet had fallen into disuse as it had not been maintained; we renovated, painted and newly furnished and equipped it. Our actions have stimulated others in the community; two other beach chalets have been improved by local people to use as holiday homes. The grounds around the chalet has also been improved, grass is cut, and rubbish is cleared.

In all our cottages electrical appliances are newly purchased and comply with modern standards of energy efficiency. We turn off lights and appliances when not in use. We will fit energy saving light bulbs as soon as we have supplies. All cottages have showers to reduce water use. We have a laundry scheme where we only change towels and sheets after 7 days.

Beer bottles can be recycled if guests leave them for us and guests can avoid packaging by buying fruit and vegetables from the street market, where you have to take your own bags. The local people repair items, rather than disposing of then and getting new ones.

The cottage provides work for a manager-housekeeper, grounds man, plumber, electrician, handy-person and additional income for our regular taxi driver and the car hire office. We only provide accommodation, for all else: food, drink, entertainment, shopping, tourist activities and transport, guests go out to the local community. The chalet is located within walking distance, 5 minutes by bus from View Fort, where local fruits, vegetable and fish can be bought from the markets and stores.

Tourism can be good and bad for destinations & local people.

We carefully screen every holiday against our criteria for responsible travel.

'Look behind the brochure' to find how each holiday makes a difference (see left).

We don't claim to be perfect - there is no global accreditation - but we've led the way since 2001 and screened 1000's of holidays.

We invite every traveller to write a review about their experiences and responsible tourism.

This valuable feedback is sent to the people who run the holidays. We keep a very close eye on it and take off holidays that don't live up to our standards.
