how this holiday makes a difference
|
We conserve energy by using where we can energy efficient light bulbs. We control our central heating to avoid waste. We provide information to our guests and encourage them to switch off lights and appliances when not in use we practice this ourselves. We recycle everything; clothes and furniture are donated to charity shops. We try to cut down on paper by conducting most of our business via internet and email. The paper we use has been recycled.
Scraps are given to the dog and other food and garden materials are composted. We grow organic fruit and fertilisers or pesticides are never used in the garden. We encourage wildlife by growing plants and shrubs that they are attracted to and we provide bird houses, baths and feeders for the birds. We ensure that we save water by installation of showers instead of baths and our guests are made aware of the policy that we launder towels every second day. We always recommend local restaurants, some menus are available in the rooms. We donate good quality clothing, furniture, bric a brac books etc to local charities. All produce etc is purchased from local butchers, fishmongers farmers etc. We encourage our visitors to eat in local restaurants, buy local goods and encourage them to travel by local transport where possible. |
Tourism can be good and bad for destinations & local people. We carefully screen every holiday against our criteria for responsible travel. 'Look behind the brochure' to find how each holiday makes a difference (see left). We don't claim to be perfect - there is no global accreditation - but we've led the way since 2001 and screened 1000's of holidays. We invite every traveller to write a review about their experiences and responsible tourism. This valuable feedback is sent to the people who run the holidays. We keep a very close eye on it and take off holidays that don't live up to our standards. |
