description
Bed and breakfast accommodation in Gilsland on a working farm in the heart of Hadrian’s Wall country.

We offer bed and breakfast accommodation in our grade II listed farmhouse and beautifully converted stone byre. We have a range of rooms, most of them en suite, all spacious and tastefully decorated to enhance the character of the buildings.

We also offer home-cooked evening meals, placing a strong emphasis on using good quality and local ingredients and trying to produce as much of them as we can ourselves.

We are fortunate to live on a beautiful farm surrounded by stunning countryside and rich history. Hadrian’s Wall was built from Wallsend to the Solway Coast and much of it is still intact. Our land contains a long stretch of the Wall as well as 2 turrets, the remains of a Roman Camp and a Roman Bridge. We are less than 1 mile from Birdoswald Roman Fort and less than a days’ walk from Housesteads and Vindolanda.

We are in the process of converting the farm to organic status and are hoping to enter the Higher Level and Organic Entry Level Stewardship schemes, which will commit us to protecting and encouraging wildlife on the farm, preserving the historic features and extending public access around the land.
rooms, food and facilities
Bedroom, B&B on Hadrians wallAll of our guests have drinks making facilities and digital radios in their rooms. There is a television in the guests’ lounge and we will top flasks up at no extra charge. We offer evening meals and packed lunches and are licensed to serve alcohol.

Cycling & walking friendly: We are right on Hadrian’s Wall National Trail and very close to the cycle way. We offer a warm welcome and fresh food for walkers and cyclists and have space to store bikes in our outbuildings.

Hadrians Wall, B&B on Hadrians wallDisabled access: We have several ground floor rooms, some with wet rooms.

Baby & family friendly: Our farm is an ideal holiday location for families. We find that children particularly enjoy the open space, Hadrian’s wall and all the animals on the farm. We have no specific facilities for babies but families with babies and small children are very welcome.

Dog friendly: We also accept well-behaved dogs.

By rail: The nearest train station is Haltwhistle, from where we are happy to pick you up.
By car: Turn north off the A69 onto the road signposted "Spadeadam, Gilsland, Denton". We are in Gilsland.
how this holiday makes a difference
We have installed a wood-burning boiler that provides all of our heat and hot water from a sustainable fuel. We have also switched energy supply to Good Energy's 100% renewable tariff. Wood is sourced from the local skip company and waste from the local forestry. We minimise energy use using low energy light fittings, keeping appliances to a minimum and buying efficient appliances where they are necessary. We have a towel agreement, use ecover cleaning products and recycle all paper, glass, plastic, cans and compost all organic waste.

River, B&B on HadrianWe have joined a pilot of the Green Tourism Business Scheme and have been given a gold award and are members of the Tourism and Conservation Partnership, supporting their red squirrels project. This scheme offers guests the chance to add £1 to their bill, which goes directly to the red squirrel fund.

We are about to join the Soil Association to convert the farm to organic status. We are hoping to enter the Higher Level and Organic Entry Level Stewardship schemes, which will commit us to protecting and encouraging wildlife, preserving the historic features and extending public access around the land.

We are members of RSPB and the Wildfowl and Wetlands Trust. We source as much of our produce as possible from local businesses. We buy local organic produce where at all possible and use local tradesmen. We sell cards and pictures taken by a local photographer and use locally handmade soaps in our guest rooms. We encourage our guests to use public transport and display all relevant information about this and local walks and attractions. We are also members of the Brampton Fairtrade group and Cumbria Organics as well as being on the committee of the local tourism partnership.

Tourism can be good and bad for destinations & local people.

We carefully screen every holiday against our criteria for responsible travel.

'Look behind the brochure' to find how each holiday makes a difference (see left).

We don't claim to be perfect - there is no global accreditation - but we've led the way since 2001 and screened 1000's of holidays.

We invite every traveller to write a review about their experiences and responsible tourism.

This valuable feedback is sent to the people who run the holidays. We keep a very close eye on it and take off holidays that don't live up to our standards.
