how this holiday makes a difference

We have a fleet of six electric vehicles and one LPG car to reduce petrol/diesel reliance and CO2 emissions. We have a solar heating system for outdoor pool to reduce oil/gas use. We use efficient, non-standard, combination boilers in all letting accommodation and additional, non-standard, insulation included in all new lodges (20.5% to 33.5% reduction in gas usage). Energy efficient light bulbs are used throughout our letting accommodation. Guests help to separate waste into recyclable groups with recycling, cardboard and bottle banks on site for guest and community use.
We are introducing a Seedum roof on new Welcome building. By recycling all compostable waste we are now fully self-sufficient for compost and mulch. We are an associate member of the New Forest Marque and are dedicated to using local suppliers wherever possible as a means of reducing carbon footprint and sustaining our local economy. We have a large scale woodland management project to cultivate indigenous broad-leaf trees and a substantial bird nesting programme. We are committed to sustainability at every level including as a socially responsible employer. As a major local employer we offer opportunities to retired people, returners to work and seasonal workers. We currently employ 200 local people. We are a sympathetic employer and embrace the need for flexible working patterns for our staff and provide on going training opportunities to ensure that they maximize their potential. Staff receive general and job specific training and additional opportunities for career progression if desired. They are engaged at all levels of our business to contribute to our collective future and departments are encouraged to create solutions and opportunities that will affect them. We undertake apprenticeships and also encourage day release study and will contribute to or cover training fees. We regularly provide long term university placement positions and work experience opportunities for pupils from local schools. We have contributed £15,000 over five years to help establish Fordingbridge Museum and have contributed £1000 to help establish Fordingbridge Community Tourism Group. We have contributed £1000 to Fordingbridge Jubilee monument and also donated a skateboard half-pipe to Fordingbridge town council to help with youth engagement problems in the town centre. We also give numerous small donations each year to local projects, schools and groups totalling circa £11,000. We also provide manual assistance and promotional support to Fordingbridge show and local Rotary Club Fireworks, are a leading contributor to Fordingbridge community action group and also provide many presentations to local schools and colleges to assist with tourism/leisure courses or career choices. |
Tourism can be good and bad for destinations & local people. We carefully screen every holiday against our criteria for responsible travel. 'Look behind the brochure' to find how each holiday makes a difference (see left). We don't claim to be perfect - there is no global accreditation - but we've led the way since 2001 and screened 1000's of holidays. We invite every traveller to write a review about their experiences and responsible tourism. This valuable feedback is sent to the people who run the holidays. We keep a very close eye on it and take off holidays that don't live up to our standards. |
