introduction to Belize City accommodation
Enjoy staying in our tranquil, secure and beautiful eco-village located just a short distance from popular attractions. Why spend hours in travel time, when you could be deep in the jungle enjoying the natural beauty of Belize and tubing at Caves Branch instead?
Experience the historical mystery of Lamanai. Nestled deep in the forest, this is one of the largest Mayan sites in Belize. The exotic flora and fauna you see along the New River Cruise to get there is unforgettable.
But possibly the most memorable part of your trip will be the time spent at our eco-village. Our eco-village contains a butterfly corridor, a nature swimming pool, an epiphyte and bromeliad collection, an iguana sanctuary, a nature trail and a Museum of Nature’s Artistry in Root and Stone.
From our tranquil, secure and beautiful eco-village 14 miles outside Belize City, you can easily explore the mystery and beauty of much of Belize. Enjoy cave tubing, and zip-lining through the tropical rainforest canopy; cruise on the New River up to a remote lagoon, observing exotic flora and fauna on the way. Marvel at the Mayan ruins at Lamanai. Snorkel in the Caribbean with massive rays and nursing sharks, and on the barrier reef at the Hol Chan Marine Reserve. Have a close encounter with howler monkeys at the so-called Baboon Sanctuary (there are no baboons in Belize!). Visit the unique collection of rescued Belizean animals at the Belize Zoo, with its handpainted signs in rhyming couplets; and Old Belize, with its interesting museum and delightful Cucumber Beach.
Many guests comment on the excellence of our food. We offer meticulously prepared meals that are a delicious mixture of Creole, Garifuna, Mayan, Mestizo and Taiwanese dishes. We pride ourselves on using organically grown fruit and vegetables whenever possible; our food contains no chemicals or preservatives whatsoever, and we make our own bread, yoghurt and flower tea. Vegetarians are welcome, and well catered for.
Joining our program means enjoying quality experiences that would normally carry a significantly higher price tag. Our rooms are clean, spacious and air-conditioned, each with two double beds and en suite bathroom. Guests also often comment on the peace and tranquility of our private village, with its tropical gardens and wonderful birds and butterflies. Experience the lush beauty of the tropics right outside your door! Our nature swimming pool provides fresh water swimming in a completely natural setting, without the use of chemicals. We have a library on site, internet access and satellite TV.

|
We are actively trying to help promote eco-tourism in Belize, because that is the best way of preserving the natural wonders and the bio-diversity that still exists there, and which the current Government also seems sincere in wanting to preserve, while at the same time working towards improving the standard of living of the average Belizean citizen.
For those who demonstrate their commitment to eco-sustainability and bio-diversity by coming regularly and by recommending others to come regularly, we have an incentive scheme which culminates in actually giving away half acres of land on a 300 acre “Green Reserve” bordering the Crooked Tree Wildlife Sanctuary, for like-minded people to build their own cabana on, with no carbon footprint, as a living example of what can be done to live in a more eco-sustainable way, putting back at least as much as you take from the planet’s natural resources. All our garden lights are solar powered. We use two solar pumps, one for the fountain and one for the aquaponis system. We collect rain water for use in the garden and laundry and shower. We cultivate our garden without the use of pesticides and fertilisers. We compost our kitchen waste, use it as fertilizer. We run sustainable programs including an experimental organic Aquaponics system, a mushroom house, a small Bamboo farm and a small lemon farm. We recycle glass, plastic and paper or reclaim for other use. We make our table lights in the hotel rooms from recycled plastic containers. We have developed a museum to exhibit the sustainable use of the tropical environment. We have used a reclaimed mahogany trunk as a table. We support charities. We contributed more than 7000 Belize dollars to hurricane Katrina victims two years ago. We have also recently donated US $3000 to a human rights forum, and US $10000 to help set up the first classroom in Belize dedicated to the education of children with special needs. We encourage our guests to visit local attractions, eat in local restaurants and by local produce. We also encourage our guests to use public transport or local services when guests join our 4 week program. We employ all local staff. We support the local community by promoting an experimental Belize program dedicating to attract the retiree or investor to Belize. |
Tourism can be good and bad for destinations & local people. We carefully screen every holiday against our criteria for responsible travel. 'Look behind the brochure' to find how each holiday makes a difference (see left). We don't claim to be perfect - there is no global accreditation - but we've led the way since 2001 and screened 1000's of holidays. We invite every traveller to write a review about their experiences and responsible tourism. This valuable feedback is sent to the people who run the holidays. We keep a very close eye on it and take off holidays that don't live up to our standards. |
