We support the local community by using local produce. We support the John Aspinal Foundation who own two local zoo’s by adopting a Red Panda and contributing towards its wellbeing. We provide local information in each room to encourage them to use the local facilities. We provide detailed local itineraries to follow such as cycling routes, family days out, walking routes, garden visits and castle visits in the local area. We employ all local staff. We buy local produce from the nearby farmshop for the guests and our meals. We use local services such as builders, electricians and plumbers for the maintenance of the property. We are an industry champion for the hospitality industry in Kent i.e linking local business to education.
We minimise energy use by using energy efficient light bulbs and appliances and turning off lights and appliances when not in use We collect rain water for use in the garden. We have showers and half flush toilets to reduce water use. We have a laundry scheme where we only change towels and sheets after 4/5 days or when guests request them. We use eco cleaning products such as ecover in the property. We encourage wildlife in our garden by putting up bird boxes, creating a pond, leaving an area of the garden uncut to encourage wild flowers. We compost all of our food and garden waste feed all our food waste to dog and horses. We recycle glass, plastic and paper and have facilities for our guests to recycle their waste too. We run a paper free office and use recycled stationary when necessary. We give our guests leaflets and information about the conservation of the natural environment and encourage them to use public transport. We grow our own vegetables. |
Tourism can be good and bad for destinations & local people. We carefully screen every holiday against our criteria for responsible travel. 'Look behind the brochure' to find how each holiday makes a difference (see left). We don't claim to be perfect - there is no global accreditation - but we've led the way since 2001 and screened 1000's of holidays. We invite every traveller to write a review about their experiences and responsible tourism. This valuable feedback is sent to the people who run the holidays. We keep a very close eye on it and take off holidays that don't live up to our standards. |
