description
This is a small country hotel with 20 double or twin rooms, 8 of which have ocean view.

It’s uniquely situated at the top of a hill overlooking the Atlantic ocean. In the background looms the mystical Snaefellsjokull Glacier, made famous in Jules Verne’s story ‘Journey to the centre of the Earth’ as the entrance to the centre.

Two sun decks, lounges and the dining room face the ocean which allows guests to enjoy the orca whales which are frequently seen in the waters off the coast from end April till end July. We have been certified by Green Globe since 2002, and the hotel was the first tourism business in Iceland to receive such recognition.

Dwellings of elves and hidden people can be found close to our Icelend holiday accommodation as well as powerful ley-lines, for those interested in the mystical aspect of the surroundings. Bird watches love the Snaefellsnes Peninsula because of the many different species of birds that can be found there and the bird cliffs at Hellnar are less than 10 min walk away from the hotel. The Arctic Fox can often be spotted in the Snaefellsjokull National Park which is only 6 km away from us, and it only takes about 15 min of driving to get to the snowline of Snaefellsjokull Glacier.

how this holiday makes a difference
Iceland holiday accommodationThe hotel has been run by an Environmental Management policy since 2000, which means we have focussed on saving energy and water, recycled waste and reused everything possible since then. We save energy by using energy efficient light bulbs, using motion sensors on lights in the hallways of the hotel – which then turn off the lights once a person has left the area, systematically turning off all lights and appliances in areas where no one is working, use gas for cooking – along side two electric burners and measure energy used on annual basis. We ask our guests to reuse towels – and we only change sheets every 3 days if people stay for a longer period of time.

We save water at our Iceland holiday accommodation by using a water meter for the hotel to measure how much water is used per person staying there, use low flush toilets in most rooms and use special showerheads that reduce the amount of flow and we never leave a water faucet running unnecessarily for any period of time. All detergents used are biodegradable, paint is eco friendly and building material comes from forests that are replanted. We recycle all glass (bottles, jars etc), newspaper, plastic bottles and cans. We have a policy for reuse which means we print on both sides of a paper, and reuse half sheets as notes etc.

Puffin, hotel on a glacier in IcelandWe use local suppliers for food products such as fish and eggs, and shop at the local supermarket for items that are not bought wholesale. We also use a local transportation company. We use the local laundry service by renting linen from them and having them do our laundry with eco-labelled detergents. We also promote the local activities such as glacier tours, whale watching trips, island cruises and horse trekking. We support the local community with a lot of volunteer work around environmental issues such as protection of land, signage for important places to visit and hiking trails. We also make a monthly monetary contribution to the Snaefellsnes Environmental Fund.

Tourism can be good and bad for destinations & local people.

We carefully screen every holiday against our criteria for responsible travel.

'Look behind the brochure' to find how each holiday makes a difference (see left).

We don't claim to be perfect - there is no global accreditation - but we've led the way since 2001 and screened 1000's of holidays.

We invite every traveller to write a review about their experiences and responsible tourism.

This valuable feedback is sent to the people who run the holidays. We keep a very close eye on it and take off holidays that don't live up to our standards.
