description
This safari lodge accommodation is part of the world-renowned Sabi Sand Game Reserve. This reserve borders on the Kruger National Park. There is no dividing fence between the two reserves and therefore our 7000 ha is part of the vast Kruger National Park ecosystem. You will never feel crowded here whether at the lodge or on your game drive. Thus you can relax without the hustle and bustle of the city and really enjoy the African savannah. The term 'the big five' refers to the five most famous of the great African mammals: lion, leopard, elephant, rhino and buffalo.
These are regularly sighted here. However, there is much more to the African savannah than the big five. All the plains mammals are to be found here, whose ecosystem is largely unaffected. For example, if one's interest is in bird life we offer more than three hundred species of birds.Morning & evening game drives Bush walks Village trips Spa treatments

rooms, food and facilities
We offer guests the choice of three luxury lodges: from the magnificent Bush Lodge to the private Galago, as well as the unique Vuyatela. We show you the softer, gentler side of Africa with luxury lodges, sumptuous cuisine and all the creature comforts.
All three lodges have experienced and qualified guides that will ensure the best possible safari.
Vuyatela (sleeps 16) A celebration of modern South Africa in all its intricate glory with an extensive collection of contemporary African artwork. This is a unique African experience, from the coke bottle chandeliers to the extraordinary attention to detail in mosaics and other art. You can sip cocktails from your private pool while watching wild animals meander in front of you. There is also a library, gym and a wellness centre (from massages to pedicures).
Bush Lodge (sleeps 16) is a rather special lodge, with eight thatched chalets tucked away in our indigenous gardens. The main building is an impressive open thatched construction with two viewing decks. It overlooks the pool next to the watering hole.
Galago (sleeps 10) offers groups an entire camp with total exclusivity with self-catering accommodation for up to 10 people. Galago is serviced and you can also employ a chef to cook for you. A field guide, tracker and an open Landcruiser, is your private guide through the bush.
Disabled access: At Bush Lodge we have hosted guests who are in wheel chairs in #8 which has easier access, a larger bathroom and ramps can be fitted. The pathways are accessible and staff assist in getting the guest to the main lodge and onto vehicles.
Family & baby friendly: All the lodges allow children of all ages. Children under 6 years are not allowed on game drives unless a private vehicle has been booked. There are babysitting facilities and we can supply a cot. Children participate in walks and village trips.
By car: Driving from Nelspruit follow Route 40 to Acornhoek and then follow the signs to Sabi Sands. Enter at Gowrie Gate.

how this holiday makes a difference

We have built two crèches in the Dixie and Utha villages. The schools have grown since their inception and now over 150 children attend the crèches and are fed a snack in the morning and a full lunch. The school employs 2 principals, a teacher, 6 teaching aides and 2 chefs. All the staff are from the local villages. On a monthly basis we pay all the food costs, salaries, repairs and maintenance and replacement of equipment or crockery and cutlery.
We have frequent workshops on HIV/AIDS and health care. We transport staff to the locals clinics weekly, pay for doctor visits and have adapted our staff ration packs to build immune systems. We endorse a local soccer team. We purchase kits, boots, balls and trophies yearly. We also endorse a Drama and Debating Team in Hluvukani. This group has been running for 4 years and one of the youngsters has received a bursary to university to study Drama. We fund a marathon runner from Huvukani who runs various marathons during the year. We work closely with the Buffelshoek Trust of which Jurie is a director. We use local contractors and suppliers as far as possible. We use low voltage bulbs, have lowered geyser temperatures and we use gas for cooking. Left over food and cuttings not eaten by the staff is delivered as pig food in the local village. The waste is separated and the taken to Acornhoek (the company was recommended and approved by the Heritage Programme). The waste is deposited at the Acornhoek dump. All Glass, tins, cans, tinfoil and plastic are already separated and are then distributed to recycling depots which are all registered. We wash towels every 3 days rather than daily and we have messages to guests to save water. We gather rain water for gardens and the soak away from septic tanks used to water gardens. We maintain the road to prevent erosion and we create fire breaks when needed. We employ 98% of our staff from the local villages. In the case of temporary staff we also use local village people. We pay higher than normal salaries in our area to our staff. One salary in the local village supports on average 8 people. We also employ the crèche staff. We offer a daily village trip to the local villages daily. Guests pay R183 per person. Their guide or tracker takes them to their homes, crèche & schools, local store and church or witch doctor. This money is then split between the guide, fuel for the lodge and the balance to the crèches or a village project. We support local suppliers and tradesmen. |
Tourism can be good and bad for destinations & local people. We carefully screen every holiday against our criteria for responsible travel. 'Look behind the brochure' to find how each holiday makes a difference (see left). We don't claim to be perfect - there is no global accreditation - but we've led the way since 2001 and screened 1000's of holidays. We invite every traveller to write a review about their experiences and responsible tourism. This valuable feedback is sent to the people who run the holidays. We keep a very close eye on it and take off holidays that don't live up to our standards. |
