description
West Sussex luxury bed and breakfast

A unique blend of former coaching inn, restaurant and 9 rooms.

This award-winning restaurant with rooms combines a two-rosette menu with organic local and seasonal produce, over 600 wines and uncluttered rooms with mod cons you would expect. The bar and restaurant are closed Sunday evening and all day Monday. Accommodation is open 7 days. Located at the foot of the South Downs in an AONB (Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty), the area is perfect for cycling or walking the wonderful countryside, direct from the front door.

Breakfast here is different, deliberately. You will have the opportunity to savour hot pastries and croissants, toast, jams and creamy yoghurts, fresh berries and other fruits, freshly brewed coffee, speciality teas and other luxuries in the comfort of your room. Many of our guests take their deluxe breakfast hamper into the garden and sit in their big fluffy robes in the beautiful morning light, or enjoy the treat of breakfast in bed.
special things to do and see here
We have excellent walking and cycling routes in every direction, straight from the front door - whether you want a circular route, or to walk to another place to stay the night. Bikes can be hired with prior notice.

There are plenty of cultural sites to visit too and we are 5 miles from the Fishbourne Roman Palace, and 4 miles from the Singleton Weald and Downland Museum amongst others.
rooms, food and facilities
Bedroom, B&B near ChichesterThe nine contemporary en suite bed and breakfast rooms provide a very high standard of accommodation in West Sussex. In keeping with our 600 wines in the restaurant, seven rooms are named after wines and two are named after champagnes. All have polished floorboards, rugs, enveloping bath robes, firm super-king beds, five-channel TVs, direct dial phone, central heating and other quality features. A deluxe continental breakfast hamper is served to your room (in bed if you wish!) or in the garden, weather permitting.

Our 'wine rooms' all face out on the private flint-walled garden. The three upstairs have baths and the four downstairs have power showers.

Bedroom, B&B near ChichesterOur 'champagne rooms' have the additional comforts of a sofa (one is a sofa bed), wide flat-screen TVs, DVD/Video players, a small fridge and pampering bath products. One looks out on the private flint-walled garden and has a power shower, the other has its own small courtyard, bath and power shower.

Disabled access: Two of our ground floor bedrooms have a hand-rail in the shower, and again by the toilet, and we have two portable seats that can be used in the shower. People in wheelchairs are able to dine in the restaurant or bar, but unfortunately, we have not been able to adjust our restaurant/bar toilets for wheelchair use.

Family & baby friendly: Well-behaved children of all ages are very welcome, including babies. One of our ‘champagne’ rooms has a sofa bed, for others we have two portable camp beds which add a real adventure to the children’s stay.

Pet friendly: Dogs welcome in the bar and the rooms.

how this holiday makes a difference
We have been awarded the 'Gold' Green Tourism Business Scheme'. In 2005 we wrote our first Sustainability Policy, which we regularly update. It sets out what we have achieved to date, to help reduce our environmental impact, and things we plan to do in the future. For example, we have installed low energy light bulbs wherever possible, with sensors and timers in other areas. We recycle glass, paper and cardboard throughout the bar, restaurant and bedrooms, paying to have it collected and recycled. Most of our food packaging is cardboard and there is obviously a large amount of glass from the 600 wine labels we have on our list!

Staying guests are encouraged to recycle too, with a recycling bin in each room, and a small sign explaining the initiatives we have taken and the steps they can take. The water tumblers in the rooms are made from recycled cognac bottles, magazines are from local hairdressers, books are from local charity shops, towels are only changed (within a four day stay period) if guests place them in the bath, and Fair Trade tea, coffee, hot chocolate and sugar are used in all rooms. All appliances are turned off at the base, radiators are used with thermostats and on timers.

We outsource our laundry (reducing water consumption in the local area, through economies of scale), only use eco-friendly cleaning products that are biodegradable, and provide gorgeous L'Occitaine bath products in quality dispensers in the majority of rooms, to avoid wastage. (The two champagne rooms have 'take home' L'Occitaine products). On a wider scale, we refill ink cartridges, re-use paper for notes, have installed a huge 500 litre water butt to collect and redistribute rain water, for watering the garden and 'induct' all staff in environmental responsibility upon joining us. Having restored the pond, and built duck houses which are now used for nesting, we plan to put in bat boxes and owl boxes, and we also plan to do our own composting, amongst many other plans!

We strongly support the local area. The majority of our produce is local and most of that organic. The organic beef, pork, chicken and lamb are from five miles away in Rogate, eggs come from the Happy Hen Company, eight miles away; fish and shell food is from Selsey, twelve miles away. Our guest bedroom folder contains a long list of wonderful places for guests to visit nearby, ranging from National Trust properties such as Uppark to the Singleton Weald and Downland Museum with its nearly 50 historic buildings dating from the 13th to the 19th century.

For walkers and cyclists we have nine especially designed ordinance survey maps (one for each room), showing the fantastic tracks, in every direction directly from our front door. In addition, we encourage guests to walk from other hotels/B&Bs to us, perhaps over the Downs, stay the night and then walk on from us, we take their luggage to their next stopping point. We tried to lobby the Government for public transport directly to us, a couple of years ago, but to date have not been successful.

Valley, B&B near ChichesterIn total we have eight staff, six of which are local, and four of which have been with us for over ten years. Our plumbers, electricians and builders are all local and we encourage them to think of environmental factors, such as material-use, when doing their work.

We have a strong connection with the local Leukaemia Foundation, and St Wilfred’s hospice, and this year will also be supporting two local charities that support local people at Christmas time.

Tourism can be good and bad for destinations & local people.

We carefully screen every holiday against our criteria for responsible travel.

'Look behind the brochure' to find how each holiday makes a difference (see left).

We don't claim to be perfect - there is no global accreditation - but we've led the way since 2001 and screened 1000's of holidays.

We invite every traveller to write a review about their experiences and responsible tourism.

This valuable feedback is sent to the people who run the holidays. We keep a very close eye on it and take off holidays that don't live up to our standards.
