The best part of my holiday was that is was, simply, relaxing. That's what I was looking for. Dan and Holly at the lodge really took care of me, and the dogs were a great addition to my walks. (more)

Deluxe Rainforest Cabin (2-4 people): This large and spacious one room cabin is located in a secluded area against the edge of the rainforest. The cabin has a queen size bed and single size bunk beds. There is a private bathroom and shower and includes a front porch and covered back deck. The cabin is fully screened and has an open air design for maximum ventilation and wildlife viewing.

There are shared bathrooms and showers just a few feet away from the rooms. Both rooms have a queen size bed and open air design.
The main lodge is also where the dining area is located. There is also a 400 square foot rancho near the stream with hammocks and chairs. Wireless satellite internet is available for a fee.
Family friendly: The lodge has two rainforest cabins that can accommodate a family of up to four people. The grounds on the lodge are open and spacious with a nicely trimmed lawn making it safe for children. Between the animal viewing, swimming in the stream, and nice roads for easy hiking there will be plenty to do to fill the children's days with education and play. Walking & cycling friendly: We have dirt roads nearby that go for miles and are easily hiked. We are also surrounded by mountains and can offer more adventurous hiking in this rarely visited jungle terrain. Mountain biking is also available on these same roads.
how to find us
By air: The nearest airport is in Palmar Sur. Once you land in Palmar Sur it is about a 20 minute taxi ride to the small town of Sierpe located along the Sierpe River. In Sierpe you will be picked up and taken by boat for a 35 minute ride down the river (this river is calm) and through Central America's largest mangrove reserve. The mangroves are a wonderful sight with many types of birds and other wildlife to be seen on your ride in. The boat takes you to the edge of the lodge where you will be greeted by your hosts with an ice cold coconut and a straw.how this holiday makes a difference

We are helping develop tours with the local community so they can share in the income produced from those tours. Our general manager is a local resident. We have contributed financially to local public works projects that benefit the community. We buy as much fresh fruit, vegetables, fish and chicken that we can from the local community.
The lodge and two cabins were newly reconstructed in early 2007. We adhered to both traditional styles and sustainable practices. We were able to reuse 30% of the wood from the existing structures. All buildings are one story and blend well with the natural landscape. Open-air design allows for both maximum ventilation and natural light. The design of the structures minimizes the effects of unnatural light at night. All wood used was sustainable from fallen trees in the local area. Our construction crew was a family of local Costa Ricans, supervised by a Canadian contractor. All other materials were purchased locally when available and transported by boat. Our lodge is in a remote location were there is no public electricity, water or cellular service. The lodge was designed around the principles of sustainability to protect the environment and meet these challenges. Energy policies are in place to conserve consumption. We run off a 100% robust solar power system with a backup diesel generator. We use energy efficient bulbs, a low wattage refrigerator and energy-star appliances. Energy usage is monitored through a computer on the solar power system. Water usage policies are in place and consumption monitored and managed. A gravity fed water system eliminates excessive water pressure and waste. Special trashcans are located throughout the lodge to support our recycling policies. All recyclable trash is separated and transported to the nearest recycling center in town. All plants in our gardens are endemic species; no watering of the grounds or use of pesticides is necessary. We supply our guests with and use biodegradable non-bleach soaps and natural cleaners. We buy locally grown fruits and vegetables as well as fish and chicken when we can. We have a radio and satellite Internet for communications. We have many resource materials, field guides and books in our library to help educate our guests on the many types of trees, plants, animals and insects of the Osa Peninsula. We worked with the local health Minister directly to shut down a farm that was illegally raising about 50 pigs and 200 chickens that was causing harm to the local environment. We have 10 acres of protected primary rainforest that is part of our property and under our management. We are working with the local community and government to get a public water system in place for the community. We filed a claim against a foreign landowner who illegally cut trees on a public area. |
Tourism can be good and bad for destinations & local people. We carefully screen every holiday against our criteria for responsible travel. 'Look behind the brochure' to find how each holiday makes a difference (see left). We don't claim to be perfect - there is no global accreditation - but we've led the way since 2001 and screened 1000's of holidays. We invite every traveller to write a review about their experiences and responsible tourism. This valuable feedback is sent to the people who run the holidays. We keep a very close eye on it and take off holidays that don't live up to our standards. |
