how this holiday makes a difference
This one of the most unspoilt and interesting areas in Europe, with the Bavarian and Bohemian National Parks on either side of the border, both within a short walk of the house. Both National Parks have very strict environmental protection policies and we support the Bavarian National Parks campaign to extend the area of the Park where nature is left entirely to its own devices.
All guests are requested to separate every item of waste possible into containers provided (including Tetra Packs, batteries etc) which we then take to the recycling centre. Vegetable matter is composted for the garden. We have solar panels and will have all new windows and insulated roofs by the end of 2007. And we emphasize that our tap water is from local springs so there is no need to buy bottled water! We collect rain water to water the garden and flower pots and window boxes. We use low energy light bulbs wherever possible and have water saving taps.
We encourage guests to use the village restaurants and shops and other facilities: a museum, a railway station which is the only one in Europe divided between 2 countries, playground and sports facilities. We encourage guests to use public transport every apartment is provided with a local timetable for guests to take away, we provide details of train journeys to more distant places: Passau, Regensburg and Plzen and buy stocks of local rover tickets for guests to buy.
We are fully involved in village events and in future planning for the village. We use village tradesmen whenever possible. We encourage guests to support events of local organisations. We encourage guests to visit both sides of the border and give them lots of information about the history of the area to encourage international understanding. We donate 2 separate weeks each year (to be taken at any time including high season) to 2 charitable/campaigning organisations for them to auction to raise funds for their activities. This usually raises up to £2,000 per year in total.
