description
The lodge is located at Finca Tres Hermanas, a farm involved in reforestation and sustainable agriculture for more than 30 years. The lodge maintains several miles of trails which enable guests of all ages to sometimes identify up to 100 species of birds in just a few hours, a variety of flora, and diverse fauna in the canopies and on the ground.

Visitors have immediate and easy access to hundreds of acres of privately and publicly owned rainforest and secondary growth from sea level to 2,000 feet, including coastal marine habitats, ripirian and climax lowland tropical rainforest with gigantic trees over a thousand years old.

The variety of habitats in a relatively small and easily accessible area creates huge biodiversity that is conveniently observable. Around 450 species of birds have been identified around the lodge by the Costa Rican Ornithological Society, the Neotropica Foundation, and others who are attracted again and again to the rich flora and fauna. Because the lodge is located in a strategic place, you have easy access to visit the Protected Areas, National Parks and indigenous reserves in the Central and South Pacific.

We are near to the Marino Ballena National Park, Corcovado National Park or Caño Island. You can also visit Manuel Antonio National Park. In those parks you can enjoy a day on the beach and observe the wildlife. You can visit the private protected area and the lonely and beautiful Arco Beach.

how this holiday makes a difference
The lodge has been involved in the community for more than 30 years. As part of our development policy we hire local people from our communities, most of who have been with us for an average of 12-25 years. The food we serve is prepared with products that we buy from local farmers and sea products from local fishermen. We host fun-days for our local schools, and we make it an educational event for the kids, professors and parents.

The commitment that the lodge has to sustainable development and the community is evident throughout the lodge. The buildings are made from their own reforested woods, local materials, and are nestled in naturally harmonious settings. All black and grey waters have a septic treatment that assures that no pollution ends up in the forest, river or the ocean.

Frog, ecolodge in Costa RicaAll of their electricity is from solar and hydropower, and the sun heats all their water. All trails are done in a way that has the least impact on the surroundings and the least amount of erosion takes place.

The food they serve is made from products from our own gardens, and local suppliers of organic products. All our waste is recycled, organic produce is used for compost and all other products are recycled or taken to the municipal waste disposal site.

They are very active in the conservation of the park, humpback whales, the rain forest, beaches, and turtles. The lodge uses educational programs, such as speakers, seminars, and financial investment to conserve and preserve the surrounding resources and beauty. Lastly, the lodge has been a voice for the community in the government concerning the preservation of humpback whales.

Tourism can be good and bad for destinations & local people.

We carefully screen every holiday against our criteria for responsible travel.

'Look behind the brochure' to find how each holiday makes a difference (see left).

We don't claim to be perfect - there is no global accreditation - but we've lead the way since 2001 and screened 1000's of holidays.

We invite every traveller to write a review about their experiences and responsible tourism.

This valuable feedback is sent to the people who run the holidays. We keep a very close eye on it and take off holidays that don't live up to our standards.
