description
Only 15 tranquil rainforest villas occupy secluded positions amongst the world's oldest living rainforest... reinforcing the impression of being 'at one with nature', yet still providing all the creature comforts of a boutique retreat at this Daintree luxury accommodation.

Our lodges are located in the Daintree National Park, which was added to the World Heritage List in 1988 in recognition of its universal natural values.

The area is estimated to be 135 million years old and is the oldest living tropical rainforest on earth.

It is one of the most diverse and beautiful examples of Mother Nature in the world, home to a large range of plants and animals, and all are found within the largest chunk of rainforest in Australia - an area spanning approximately 1200 square kilometres.

This World Heritage Listed area contains the highest number of plant and animal species that are rare, or threatened with extinction, anywhere in the world. The rainforest is a unique area, precariously balanced between the advances of development and the warnings of environmentalists. The rainforest contains 30% of frog, marsupial and reptile species in Australia, and 65% of Australia's bat and butterfly species. 20% of bird species in the country can be found in this area and it all lives in an area that takes up 0.2% of the landmass of Australia. With approximately 430 species of birds living amongst the trees, there is 13 species that are found nowhere else in the world.
day spa
The rainforest Aboriginal people have named this place ‘Wawu-karrba’ – healing of the spirit. This is home to the spiritual ancestors of the Kuku Yalanji tribe. Our spa harnesses these potent natural forces to create a healing environment that is unique and not found anywhere else in the world. The integration of the wisdom of ancient cultures, medicines, spirituality and healing is offered in the spa treatments and naturopathy modalities. The spa is a mind, body and soul experience. It is our intention for you to take away a lasting sense of wellbeing.

One of the many attributes that makes our spa one of the unique spas of the world is its natural setting, which allows guests to be fully immersed in nature, from the time they arrive at the property and most importantly after each treatment. A connection to the surrounding environment is something that most spas in the world cannot offer.

Our friendly staff strive to ensure guest expectations are surpassed by actual experiences. The mood of the tropics lends itself to casual attire; loose, light clothing, coupled with sandshoes, runners or sandals is the perfect attire for daytime resort wear. Smart casual attire is suitable for evenings in the restaurant.

  • how this holiday makes a difference
At this Daintree luxury accommodation the business has remained at the forefront of sustainable ecotourism development in Australia and overseas, with particular attention to integration of Aboriginal culture. The vision of the property is to ensure that the natural and cultural environments are managed and operated according to the highest possible international standards, practices and guidelines in environmental sustainability and sustainable tourism.

We have replaced most of the light bulbs where practical to the energy saving fluorescent bulbs, we also have replaced all of the air conditioners to split system air conditioners however we encourage all guests to not use them and open all of the windows in their room to really experience the rainforest environment. All department supervisors are trained to minimize the amount of solid waste matter as possible in each of their departments. Staff are also encouraged to introduce new ways of reusing products where possible and limiting the amount of garbage as possible. All of our plastics, glass, paper and cardboard is separated and sent to a recycling plant.

Aboriginal youth, Eco-lodge in QueenslandAll staff members are trained upon employment with the local environment and how fragile it is, the practices we use to ensure that it is not damaged and all staff are made to do the local Aboriginal tours on the property to ensure they have an understanding of some of the local social issues in the local area.

In addition, all guests are encouraged to participate in many of the local tours we have on offer where guests can experience and learn about the rainforest eco systems and the surrounding environments. In all of the villas we supply a very informative compendium folder which also has a lot of information for guests to learn from as well.

Most of the staff are local community members and we are making larger efforts to employ local Aboriginal people from the local Aboriginal community. We have a working plan that we have put in place to train local Aboriginal people from the community to help reduce the unemployment rates in their community. We also support local aboriginal artist by allowing them to showcase and sell their work in Julaymba Gallery. All staff are trained to bulk purchase when possible, and source new green suppliers in line with the business. In the local area most of the service providers up here are environmentally accredited and most of our visitors actually ask for environmentally accredited operators. Because of our remote location most of the products we use are locally sourced.

Tourism can be good and bad for destinations & local people.

We carefully screen every holiday against our criteria for responsible travel.

'Look behind the brochure' to find how each holiday makes a difference (see left).

We don't claim to be perfect - there is no global accreditation - but we've led the way since 2001 and screened 1000's of holidays.

We invite every traveller to write a review about their experiences and responsible tourism.

This valuable feedback is sent to the people who run the holidays. We keep a very close eye on it and take off holidays that don't live up to our standards.
