description
We have created this project to prove that ecological lifestyles are synonymous with comfort, fulfillment and intelligent living.

Our old 1920s Planter's Bungalow (sleeps 4-6) has been fully renovated, while retaining its original charm. The Cottage (sleeps 3) was an existing building now rendered with mud on the exterior and extensively refurbished; it has a wide verandah, with fine views over the Bowl, an area shaped like a natural amphitheatre, complete with original stone terracing and over 1500 fruit trees, including mango, avocado, mangosteen, rambutan, papaya, wood apple, lime and orange, along with spices like clove and pepper vines.

Hike up the ridge, or down to the river; lie in the shade, absorb the views, read, paint, write or bring a picnic; pick your own herbs and salads, fish in the lake, meditate at the Banyan Tree shrine, or take a mountain bike trip back down to the coast. We can cater for particular interests, whether it be gourmet organic food, bird-watching, beaches or sight-seeing in Galle Fort.

Rather like a conventional university, this accommodation provides the space for a shifting population of teachers and students, who can then transmit knowledge through their own networks and thus seed the process of positive change.

  • how this holiday makes a difference
Parrots, self catering eco accommodation in Sri Lanka We created this project to prove that ecological lifestyles are synonymous with comfort, fulfillment and intelligent living.

This accommodation is a more permanent version of the Village of Hope, a catalyst for The Web of Hope movement and the inspiration of one of the founders, the late Dr Colin Hudson. By demonstrating working examples of role models abstracted from our database, we will provide living proof of sustainable lifestyle solutions, inspired by the natural ‘intelligence’ of biological systems.

Modern permaculture concepts have been combined with traditional farming methods, like the inter-cropping and diversity seen in tropical forest gardens. Appropriate building technologies, like rammed earth and traditional thatch, incorporate solar technology and systems for harvesting rainwater.

‘Localisation’ mechanisms are improving livelihoods for local villagers employed on the project. The staff are all from the community, were previously unemployed and have been socially and economically uplifted by the project. As the project expands, so will the benefits to the local community, through such initiatives as our carbon mitigation policy, providing them with renewable energy technologies as off-sets from overseas visitors and the associated travel.

The Bio-versity programme seeks to integrate traditional ecological practices with modern eco-technologies, thereby giving both visitors and the local community a new vision about living sustainably.

Tourism can be good and bad for destinations & local people.

We carefully screen every holiday against our criteria for responsible travel.

'Look behind the brochure' to find how each holiday makes a difference (see left).

We don't claim to be perfect - there is no global accreditation - but we've led the way since 2001 and screened 1000's of holidays.

We invite every traveller to write a review about their experiences and responsible tourism.

This valuable feedback is sent to the people who run the holidays. We keep a very close eye on it and take off holidays that don't live up to our standards.
