description
Our village homestay is a 250 years old traditional building. The word ‘difference’ takes its complete meaning when you stay in these traditional buildings and compare them with the modern ones.
3 acres of farm land surrounds the home stay unit and a walk through the property itself can be very refreshing. Adjacent to the mansion is a building that was used exclusively for pounding paddy and it is constructed using cut stones, mud, and wood and tiles.
In contrast with the normal tourist trails, the area is waiting to be discovered, ideal for visitors in love with nature and its serenity.
Owning one of the oldest houses in our village, we possess a collection of antiques that we inherited from our ancestors centuries ago. You will be delighted with the beauty of the village, and will be free from the hectic din of city life. You can hire an auto rickshaw or use a bike to travel around the village. A visit to the traditional snake venom treatment centre of our village could be a unique experience for the guests.
Cycle through the village & walk through the lush green paddy fields. Learn about traditional clothes weaving & about various farm activities. Visit traditional ‘pappad’ makers. Swim and fish in local water pools. Watch and learn about different local birds. Learn the art of cooking Kerala cuisines. Boat through the Muvattupuzha River, where 3 rivers meet. Visit Kadamattom church, ancient Hindu temples & Tripunithura archaeological museum.

Cycle through the village & walk through the lush green paddy fields. travellers' tales
It was a wonderful experience as it enabled me to get to know local people and to gain an insight into typical village life. Anila's family home is a very beautiful old building with antique furniture surrounded by tropical vegetation. (more)

how this holiday makes a difference

We aim to enhance the exchange of culture and tradition between the guest and local community through mutual interaction, by encouraging guests to wear the traditional Keralite dress while in Kerala. We also organise cultural shows and are making an effort to preserve the rare art forms from extinction. For example, 'thiruvatira' a festive art form would be organised on demand.
If the project is successful, we plan to donate money to a local school created for the mentally challenged children of our locality. A small library has been built so that guests can inform themselves on local language, tradition and custom. On an environmental scale, medicinal plants and herbs, seen in our farm, are protected with utmost care. Bio-degradable wastes are converted into organic manure by a vermin compost method and we only use organic manure in our farm. Usage of plastic is reduced to a minimum. Our pets are fed organically. A large amount of food waste is used to feed them. Usage of wooden stoves helps to replace electric stoves. The wood is collected from our own farm- they include coconut shells and the dry branches that fall from the trees. A considerable amount of Electricity is saved by using long life bulbs. Concrete constructions cannot be found on our farm land. We take care not to disturb the fine ecological balance that exists on our premises. The presence of innumerable birds on our farm land is the evidence for a balanced ecology. Birds, trees and insects are allowed to grow and prosper in their natural ways. Water sources are protected from being contaminated. We have a well and a pond as the sources of water. We don’t use any chemical pesticides which would pollute the water. The waste water that comes from the kitchen is used to feed certain plants in the farm. Just before the rainy season the farm land is drilled so that the water moves deep down to the earth rather than being flooded away. To financially aid the local community, we make use of the local services (taxis, medical services etc), we make arrangements for the guests to visit the traditional weavers and ‘pappad’ makers in our locality and buy their products, the entirety of the farm activities and maintenance of the home stay are carried out by local workmen, and guests who wish to have ayurveda treatment are directed to a local ayurvedic hospital where quality treatment is assured. |
Tourism can be good and bad for destinations & local people. We carefully screen every holiday against our criteria for responsible travel. 'Look behind the brochure' to find how each holiday makes a difference (see left). We don't claim to be perfect - there is no global accreditation - but we've led the way since 2001 and screened 1000's of holidays. We invite every traveller to write a review about their experiences and responsible tourism. This valuable feedback is sent to the people who run the holidays. We keep a very close eye on it and take off holidays that don't live up to our standards. |
