introduction to Canadian Rockies
This mountain resort is nestled in the Canadian Rockies beside Kootenay National Park and offers guests a recreational and leisure environment situated right out the front door of our luxurious lodge and cabin accommodations.
The 2000 acre mountain resort brings to life the dream of its founders to create a unique wilderness haven for outdoor enthusiasts that is in harmony with the Kootenay's spectacular Rocky Mountain setting. Our eco lodge generates solar and micro-hydro electricity and is proud that its beautiful accommodations are energy self-sufficient.
This Canadian Rockies mountain resort is also a working woodlot. You may observe the horse logging operation while out on the trails. Our cabins are constructed from woodlot trees killed by mountain pine beetles, which were milled and notched onsite. Much of our beautiful wood furniture grew on site and was produced right in our woodworking shop. Through sound and selective forestry practices, it is our goal to enhance the wildlife and recreational values of the area.
There is a natural emphasis on self-propelled recreation at the resort. With its 50-kilometre trail network and rivers nearby, the resort beckons visitors to hike, cross country ski, snowshoe, mountain bike, canoe and kayak. Our resort is a friendly sanctuary for weary workers, kids and families, or for group gatherings. With facilities for conferences and group retreats for up to 100, this is an ideal destination for weddings, and remarkable retreats for friends, family and businesses.
Hiking: Enjoy the spectacular array of wildflowers growing at your doorstep on the meadow. Take a leisurely hike on on an endless trail system and plunge in to the Kootenay or cross rivers to cool down. The multi-coloured fall vistas bring the landscape to life in fall. Explore on your own or join a guided hike. For the more ambitious, we are beside to Kootenay National Park and all it's trails. Views of Mount Assiniboine the Bugaboos, and the Continental Divide are accessible by walking the Mitchell Ridge.
Mountain Biking: Millions of years ago a massive river of ice, miles wide, creaked and groaned its way out of the heights of the Canadian Rocky Mountains. This colossal glacier carved out a ditch so deep that it became known as the Rocky Mountain Trench. This valley of unprecedented beauty and varied terrain beckons to mountain bikers. Explore rolling rangelands, interspersed with spruce and pine groves, crystal clear lakes and streams, with Douglas fir and larch at higher elevations. If you cannot bring your own bike on your vacation, we have a full fleet of rental bikes. On request we offer guided instructional mountain bike tours on trails throughout the region. A mountain bike terrain park is situated at the base of Mount Sledmore - look for many additions to our terrain park in 2007.
Horse Riding: Horse owners wishing to explore the trails on horseback can ride for 100 kilometres along the beautiful Kootenay River valley - all right on your doorstep. There are also day trip opportunities into the Mount Assiniboine Park and Height of the Rockies Provincial Park as well as Kootenay National Park. Your horses are welcome at our stables.
Canoeing, Kayaking and Rafting: With the Cross, Kootenay and Kicking Horse rivers at our doorstep, we offer canoe, kayaking and whitewater rafting excursions for the tentative through to the tenacious thrill seeker. Explore the canyons, learn about the local wildlife and escape the ordinary.
Hot Springs: Just 32 kilometres from the resort is Radium Hot Springs. A great family oriented facility, Radium Hot Springs features a hot mineral pool as well as a cool swimming pool with pool slide and play area. Of course, you may prefer to stay closer to home and dip into our hot tub.
Fishing: There is great fishing on the property. Wet your fly or spinning line in search of Cutthroat Trout or a land locked Kokanee Salmon. We are close to some great walk in lakes as well. British Columbia and National Park licences are available in Radium Hot Springs. Single barbless hooks are required. We support catch and release!
Golf: For the golfers, we are one hour away from 12 golf courses. Names like Grey Wolf or Banff Springs are among the courses close to us. For the more adventurous try Coy's golf course, whose challenging 9-hole layout has never been played at par! Don't forget to try our new 19 hole frisbee golf course right out your cabin door.
Sightseeing: The natural setting of the resort lends itself to unsurpassed bird and wildlife watching. Wander on your own or join in a guided hike to learn more about the wildlife and wild sights around you. As night falls, you may see a herd of elk grazing their way through the meadow at sunset and then the sky comes alive with stars. If you are lucky the northern lights will make an appearance. Sit around the fire pit roasting marshmallows or just gaze into the flames, listening to the wolves howl.
Volleyball, Bocce, Frisbee, Shoe Toss: If you still are not tired from the day's activities there is a volleyball court, 9-hole Frisbee golf course, horseshoe pits and bocce balls.

As an eco-resort, we operate in harmony with its beautiful, natural environment. Our philosophy is to fully engage and enjoy the spectacular setting using self propelled activities, while utilizing clean energy sources, and recycling everything we can. It is our goal to enjoy the Rocky Mountains in non-consumptive ways. The resorts power is sourced from the sun, the stream, and the forest. We are completely off grid. Being solar & micro-hydro powered, all of the eco-resort’s electricity is generated via clean and natural means. The majority of the resorts heating needs are satisfied by salvaging dead wood from the woodlot and burning it in a central boiler to provide hot water heating to the guest cabins and other buildings. Hot water is supplied using the same system.
All of the buildings and much of the furniture at the resort have been built from trees killed by the Mountain Pine Beetles. Our employees selectively horse-log the woodlot, mill the dead wood on our own bandsaw mill, and build everything on site, in their woodworking shop. The team creates all of their own designs and do all the construction themselves. They take great pride in the fact that the majority of the building materials are selectively pulled from the surrounding forest from trees that are already dead. We take our environmental stewardship responsibilities seriously and therefore all of the forestry activities are done to enhance the wildlife habitat and recreational values of the land. Motorized vehicles are not permitted on the trail system, and hunting is not permitted here. The Bill Yearling Interpretive Cabin provides a home for our environmental learning center. Guests can access information on all aspects of our natural surroundings, history, and culture in this historic, interpretive facility. Anyone wishing to tour our facilities and learn more about the eco-resort can simply ask any staff members, and an educational tour will be arranged. The primary goal at this Canadian Rockies mountain resort is to offer comfortable accommodations and exciting and interesting activities in a sustainable, non-consumptive manner. |
Tourism can be good and bad for destinations & local people. We carefully screen every holiday against our criteria for responsible travel. 'Look behind the brochure' to find how each holiday makes a difference (see left). We don't claim to be perfect - there is no global accreditation - but we've led the way since 2001 and screened 1000's of holidays. We invite every traveller to write a review about their experiences and responsible tourism. This valuable feedback is sent to the people who run the holidays. We keep a very close eye on it and take off holidays that don't live up to our standards. |
