introduction to Margaret River accommodation, Western Australia

Margaret River accommodation

Our bungalows are located in a 37 acre farm central to all the renowned attractions of the Margaret River region. Pristine white beaches, magnificent caves and our world famous wineries and restaurants are all nearby.

There are only four bungalows at our Margaret River accommodation, ensuring peace and privacy for all guests. The shops and other facilities of Margaret River town are only five minutes away by car. Ride a bike or walk north to Cowaramup or south to Margaret River and beyond. Ask about our organic orchard and our crops of olives, vines, avocados and macadamias.

Enjoy the plentiful native birds and animals. Wander through the trees and watch the kangaroos come out to feed as the sun goes down. Bring warm clothes, as even in the summer, nights can be cool.

The surfing and safe beaches of Gracetown and Prevelly are only a 15 minutes drive. The rails to trails walk track is on our doorstep in beautiful Bramley National Park.

Farm & Produce
Come and explore our amazing kitchen garden. It provides enough food to feed our whole family and guests too! Whip up a tasty feast without leaving the farm. Pick your own seasonal vegetables and herbs, combine with our farm fresh eggs (Burnside olive oil and Zinfandel wine) and you have a complete meal.

We love good food and this is the reason why we grow so many different crops and raise a variety of animals. Depending on the season we may be making jam from apricots, cheesemaking, pickling olives or smoking proscuitto made from our pigs. Excess produce is sold locally. Olive oil, avocados, wine and macadamias are produced commercially. We hope we can educate and inspire all guests. Growing your own food has been estimated to cut greenhouse gas emissions by 25%. You also end up with better tasting and healthier food.

Organics
The farm has been certified organic and biodynamic, for eight years, with Australian Certified Organic. This means there are no pesticides, herbicides or artificial chemicals used in producing food on the farm. The most common question visitors ask us is “Is it harder being Organic?” We don’t think so. We had never used herbicides or pesticides so the natural balance was good to start. Guinea fowl eat wingless grasshoppers, chickens love snails and bugs, spiders thrive in the vineyard catching bugs and frogs live in the mulch near the avocado sprinklers. Everything seems to keep in balance. Our biggest problem is kikuyu grass around the vines and avocados.

how this holiday makes a difference
    Community
We only use local trades’ people and always try to buy local products. We only employ local contactors. Our guests are encouraged to support the small family owned shops, wineries and restaurants in our area that provide genuine local products and services. We provide guests with a comprehensive list of our recommendations. We feel so fortunate that we benefit from running a business in such a special and environmentally sensitive area.

We donate financially, provide produce and volunteer time to several environmental groups in Margaret River that work to protect our special area from threats of inappropriate development, clearing and pollution of water catchments. We are members and volunteers of the Margaret River Regional Producers Association, the body that runs the Margaret River Farmers Markets and also members and volunteers of Slowfood, Margaret River. We also provide support for the Margaret River Primary School Kitchen Garden.

    Environment
We have designed our Margaret River accommodation to suit the climate and make use of natural energy. The bungalows face north and catch the winter sun, making them warm in winter while verandahs make them cool in summer. Slow combustion wood heaters make the bungalows warm and cosy in the colder months. Margaret River has a mild maritime climate and the temperature rarely reaches uncomfortable levels making air conditioning unnecessary.

Only recycled and plantation pine timber was used in constructing the luxury spa bungalows. Jamie sourced the timber from salvage yards and it includes oregon roof beams from an old warehouse in East Perth as well as Western Australian jarrah and blackbutt. Deep red local gravel was used to form the rammed earth walls. Granite rock in the garden beds came from a local vineyard where it was removed to allow planting of the vines. Rainwater is collected from the roof to supply the bungalows and all waste-water is treated in an on-site sewerage plant and recycled onto the gardens. We encourage recycling at the bungalows and provide recycling bins. Food scraps are saved for our worm farm. We only use Enjo and natural cleaning products.

We have now been certified biodynamic for 8 years. This allows us to market our produce through organic suppliers and means there are no pesticides, herbicides or artificial chemicals used in producing food on the farm. We have fenced off remnant vegetation and replanted areas to encourage native birds and wildlife. Every year we plant more trees on the property. There are abundant birds, bandicoots, possums and many kangaroos that live on or visit the property from the forest.

Tourism can be good and bad for destinations & local people.

We carefully screen every holiday against our criteria for responsible travel.

'Look behind the brochure' to find how each holiday makes a difference (see left).

We don't claim to be perfect - there is no global accreditation - but we've led the way since 2001 and screened 1000's of holidays.

We invite every traveller to write a review about their experiences and responsible tourism.

This valuable feedback is sent to the people who run the holidays. We keep a very close eye on it and take off holidays that don't live up to our standards.
