We provide a ‘welcome box’ for guests which includes locally produced preserves, bread and milk, organic cereals and fair trade tea and coffee. Guests are also given information on locally available and organic produce. Guests are provided with information on biodiversity, archaeology and heritage of the area as well as information on local arts and culture. You don't even have to leave the premises to enjoy spectacular views of the surrounding mountains and lake. The lodge is surrounded on three sides by native trees and you can observe birds about their daily business, and if lucky, see a fox that comes to steal the cat's food in the evening! In Spring and early Summer the surrounding fields are alive with wildflowers and the bats are seen out hunting after dusk. Located 15km from the lodge is the Organic Centre at Rossinver, this is one of Ireland's oldest and well known organic training centres where there is a shops and restaurant well worth a visit. The Sculpture Centre at Manorhamilton offers various courses from stone carving to bronze casting and is 6km away. Guides for activities are local, i.e. hill walking, archaeology, mushroom/foraging walks etc, maintenance and housekeeping staff are also local. Our eco lodge is built to highest environmental standards. Electricity is from a renewable source, Airtricity, which generates power from wind. Guests are encouraged to separate waste for composting and recycling. Water saving taps and showers have been installed. Ecover cleaning products and microfibre cloths are used in the premises We recognise that everything we do has an effect upon the environment. We wish to minimise the adverse environmental impact of our activities and to continuously improve our environmental performance, ensuring the sustainability of our actions. The s/c unit is built to the highest eco-standards, it is a passive house with solar passive heating and very high levels of insulation with triple glazing and argon gas between panes to act as an insulator. Water is heated by solar panels. The unit is wooden so minimum amount of concrete is used to reduce environmental impact. A heat recovery system is in place where the heat is transferred from the stale air being extracted to the fresh air being taken in. All electrical appliances and bulbs at our Leitrim self catering apartment are ‘A’ rated, sensor lights are used outside. Showers, toilets and taps are water saving design, in addition, water is on a pressurized system where water volume is low but pressure is high. Guests have 2 bins in bedroom and bathroom, one for recycling and one for waste. There are three bins in living area including a composting one. There is a composter outside. There is a road side recycling facility which takes plastic, tin, cardboard and cans. Guests are very much encouraged to take part in local events such as a visit to the nearby 'Glens Centre' which is a small theatre offering Irish drama and music as well as mainstream concerts. We also boast a mobile cinema, which comes weekly, so no need to drive to an urban location, it comes to you, only in Leitrim! A visit to a rural pub is a must when staying in this area. |
Tourism can be good and bad for destinations & local people. We carefully screen every holiday against our criteria for responsible travel. 'Look behind the brochure' to find how each holiday makes a difference (see left). We don't claim to be perfect - there is no global accreditation - but we've led the way since 2001 and screened 1000's of holidays. We invite every traveller to write a review about their experiences and responsible tourism. This valuable feedback is sent to the people who run the holidays. We keep a very close eye on it and take off holidays that don't live up to our standards. |
