introduction to Orkney self catering accommodation, 5 star

Orkney self catering accommodation, 5 star
The accommodation stands in 50 acres of our own land, virtually in the centre of the highest concentration of pre-historic monuments in Western Europe, overlooking the World Heritage Site. Maeshowe, the Ring of Brodgar and the Neolithic village of Skara Brae are only minutes away.

Much of our land is under a Conservation Scheme to encourage wildlife and rare plants and you are welcome to walk through our fields, or look for trout in the stream. Although well away from roads, we are only two miles from Finstown, six from Stromness and eight from Kirkwall.

The Orkney self catering accommodation is a new house, built alongside the remains of an old croft.

The house was built by Jacky & Stewart in 1995 and designed from the start to provide high-class accommodation for those to whom comfort, privacy, seclusion, peace and quiet are essential.
special things to do and see here
The Orkney self catering accommodation is virtually in the centre of mainland Orkney and well placed whether you are energetic or just want to do nothing.

Within 8 miles are sea-angling, loch fishing (free), scuba diving on the WW1 German Fleet, two golf courses, many miles of hill walks, two swimming pools, innumerable beaches, many RSPB reserves, a pottery (the Harray Potter…!) and many, many silversmiths and top-quality craft workers.

The area has Europe’s densest collection of Neolithic remains – you are never more than a mile from a tomb, a ring or a stone. The area around us is a paradise for naturalists, walkers, photographers and bird-watchers: the only thing you will not find enough of is time.
rooms, food and facilities
Bedroom, Self catering accommodation in OrkneyThe guest wing has it's own entrance and contains, on the ground floor, the two en-suite bedrooms. One room has a king-size double bed, while the other can have either twin beds or a super-king bed and all have duvets and electric blankets.

Each bedroom is fully equipped - amenities include TV, radio-alarm, mini-fridge, spare bedding, easy chairs, hair dryers etc but each bedroom also has it's own private sun-lounge.

Furnished with easy chairs, widescreen TV, video, Bose CD/radio and a coffee-table, the panoramic views from these lounges include the Ring of Brodgar, Harray and Stenness Lochs and the Hoy hills.

Bedroom, Self catering accommodation in OrkneyFor your privacy, both bedrooms are designed so that they share no common walls: you have no neighbours beside or above you. Above the bedroom suites are the new lounge, dining area and kitchen for those wishing to self-cater.

We try to ensure that someone is here at all times but there are inevitably occasions when this is impossible. With this in mind, the accommodation is designed with a separate guest entrance so that - after your initial arrival - you can come and go as you please. We can arrange cycle hire and car hire at extremely competitive rates.

We can provide packed lunches, laundry service, wireless broadband hot-spot, dedicated washing machine and tumble dryer for guests, fax., phone and email facilities. There is a full range of local Ordnance Survey maps, a wide selection of Orkney books and a selection of DVDs and CDs. All bedding (Egyptian cotton sheets and pillowcases) and linen is provided and the comprehensively equipped kitchen with halogen hob, integrated fridge, freezer and dishwasher, oven and microwave, ensures that catering is a pleasure. To relax, a Sony Bravia TV (+Sky), with DVD recorder, an extensive library of books and maps, and - to keep in touch, wireless broadband plus a PC and printer. There is also full central heating, a washing machine, tumble drier and rotary airer.

Disabled access: The ground floor bedroom suites are easily accessible.

how this holiday makes a difference
Rebuilt in 1995 as luxury bed & breakfast accommodation, this had for centuries been a croft in the heart of rural Orkney. The croft house and around 20ha. of land are situated on the eastern boundary of what became the World Heritage Site, a scenically spectacular and environmentally sensitive location. Our objective has always been to provide the best we could, but without the inherent waste which so often accompanies luxury and with the minimum environmental disruption.

The new accommodation was not only complementary in the landscape, but was constructed using local labour and local suppliers with rigorous attention to those features which lead to waste - maximum insulation, a Kidd super-efficient oil boiler, energy-efficient double glazing (retain heat in winter, lose heat in summer); low-energy light bulbs and individually-switched lights; mains showers (no baths: too much waste). Domestic appliances are “A” or “B” energy rated and all cleaning products are eco-friendly.

In the shower-rooms we supplied both eco and Neways products: with the laundry, rather than stick to a rigid schedule –and use enormous amounts of energy and chemicals - we gave our guests the option to chose when they wanted their towels and bedding changed.

We ran the B&B this way for eleven years then using the same eco-friendly routines, converted to 5-star self-catering in 2007. We provide “green” products – from dish-washing to loo rolls, the laundry routine remains customer-led and a comprehensive recycling system is in operation, with containers provided for the various materials.

We actively managed our 20ha., taking around 30% of it - including the Burn of Rickla - out of production and putting it into CPS Schemes to encourage wildlife and bio-diversity. Around 4000 hedging plants and trees gave yet more habitat: the result is that this is a major habitat for the Orkney Vole and innumerable varieties of mouse and shrew - so our land supports many hen harriers, kestrels and owls.

One field is a haven for ground-nesting birds such as curlew, lapwing and sky-lark, while hedgehogs live in the broad hedge. The Burn is now the regular haunt of heron, while the pond areas are home each year to several families of duck.

Surrounded by land which has Statutory Protection against development, in an area where there is virtually no traffic or noise or pollution or light pollution (you can see the Northern Lights!), where the roads and tracks are narrow and winding, this accommodation was designed for the visitor who wants to escape, to relax and to soak in the character of the Island.

Our philosophy, and the work both inside and outside the house, resulted in us being awarded the Green Tourism "Gold" award. In 2005 we were finalists in the coveted Scottish Thistle Awards and in 2006 we won the Scottish Thistle Customer Care Award. We have also achieved Hospitality Assured accreditation.

Tourism can be good and bad for destinations & local people.

We carefully screen every holiday against our criteria for responsible travel.

'Look behind the brochure' to find how each holiday makes a difference (see left).

We don't claim to be perfect - there is no global accreditation - but we've led the way since 2001 and screened 1000's of holidays.

We invite every traveller to write a review about their experiences and responsible tourism.

This valuable feedback is sent to the people who run the holidays. We keep a very close eye on it and take off holidays that don't live up to our standards.
