description
The guesthouse is a traditional family run pension in the centre of Zell am See which has recently celebrated its 50th anniversary. It was opened in June 1954 by Maria and Alois Dutzler and has been family run since then. Ownership and management passed to Traudi and Oswald Mondre, before passing to Beate and Bernd Mondre in 1997. The 3rd generation of the family.
We are a relaxed eco-guesthouse surrounded by the stunning scenery of Schmittenhöhe, Lake Zeller See and Kitzsteinhorn – ideal starting point for visiting Hohe Tauern National Park nearby and Großglockner Mountain.
In September 2006 the accommodation was the first hotel in Zell am See to be awarded the Austrian and European Eco-label by the Minister for the Environment Josef Pröll. The guesthouse has cosy country style rooms, with cable TV, shower/WC, in-room safe, telephone. Many rooms with balcony. All rooms have laminate floors and antiallergic bedding.
With respect to electrosensitive guests there are no microwaves, Wireless-Lan and DECT-telephone in the whole pension. The breakfast lounge is a mobile-free zone. The accommodation is a certified Bio Austria partner. Organic products at the breakfast buffet are labelled – and are truly organic. Our house is checked by the agricultural board of control of Salzburg.
Take a drive on the magnificent Großglockner High Alpine Road through the fascinating world of mountains and glaciers of the Großglockner – Austria's highest mountain (3.798m) – up to the Franz-Josefs-Höhe is an experience you should absolutely not miss. The overwhelming beauty of nature welcomes you on the unique panoramic drive through the high mountains on the most famous street over the alps. Directly next to the toll station of the Großglockner High Alpine Road you find the Natural Preserve Ferleiten. On comfortable trails you can walk through the wildpark with its very interesting native fauna.
Hohe Tauern National Park offers 1800 km of unspoiled highland and traditional cultural landscapes invite you to numerous adventure hikes. Waterfalls, gorges, mountain lakes, natural forests, flat high valleys and safe glacier- and mountain adventures are the local characteristics and highlights of our holiday region.
Walking: Our guesthouse is located directly at the bottom of the Schmittenhöhe. Therefore we are a direct starting point for beautiful hiking tours to “our“ mountain in summer. You will find sign-posted Nordic Walking paths everywhere in the Europa-Sportregion Kaprun Zell am See. This very healthy and low-impact sport for the whole family is also very popular here – not least because we can offer the perfect setting for it...
Skiing: Our mountain, the Schmittenhöhe, offers numerous lifts and well groomed slopes. No matter if skier, snowboarder – even cross-country-skier will get one's money worth on the cross-country tracks – there is something for everyone. 77 km of slopes, well groomed, await you directly in front of our house.

The breakfast room is a mobilefree zone. Internet corner is provided. The guesthouse is heated by a system fuelled with wood pellets and solar energy – electricity is green, all washing powders and detergents are biodegradable.
We publicise local events by displaying leaflets/posters in our reception area. We provide Fair Trade coffee, tea and chocolate as part of our local ‘Salzburger’ organic breakfast buffet. This promotes awareness of Fair Trade. We have leaflets explaining Fair Trade in our breakfast room and in the reception area and we encourage our guests to use Fair trade products or local produce. We encourage guests to visit local attractions, eat in local restaurants and buy local produce. Details of attractions & restaurants are displayed in our reception area, as well as on our website. Of course, we are always available to personally recommend local amenities to our guests. We encourage our guests to use public transports or local taxis whenever possible. We have a bus stop only 150 metres away which provides links to all the surrounding areas, and the train station is a 5 minute walk away (around 500 metres). Our electricity comes from Oekostrom. Oekostrom provide power from only wind, water, and solar energy sources. We have solar panels on the roof of our breakfast room since 2006. We use energy efficient light bulbs in all areas. We use lamps with timers in areas such as our ski room and motion sensitive lamps in all stairwells & corridors. We collect rain water for garden use. We have 4 water butts totalling 1500 litres. We have showers and half flush toilets. We have a laundry scheme - we only change sheets and towels when requested to do so by the guests, or when new guests arrive. We have bird boxes. We compost organic and garden waste and use the compost in the garden for planting. We take our waste paper, plastics and glass to be recycled at the local recycling depot. We encourage guests to separate waste for recycling. We do this by providing waste separation drawers outside each group of rooms. There are drawers for paper, glass, metal, organic waste (old food) and hazardous waste (e.g. batteries). All of our toilet rolls are recycled. We live and work at the hotel, so transport pollution is kept to a minimum. We employ local staff wherever possible. Mrs Anka Jevtic, is from Zell am See and has been with us for 4 years, Manuela is from Uttendorf, she has been with us for 3 years. Previous staff have all been local and have only left due to pregnancy or retirement. We buy local products, milk, butter, yoghurt, cheese and honey are from the local farmers. We buy the milk products by the Pinzgauer dairy in Maishofen, we get the honey by Imkerei Grünwald in Hinterglemm. We only use local services - Plumber Otmar Müllauer Maishofen (2 km), Electrician Rasser Zell am See (0km), Carpenter(Menuisier) (40 km). |
Tourism can be good and bad for destinations & local people. We carefully screen every holiday against our criteria for responsible travel. 'Look behind the brochure' to find how each holiday makes a difference (see left). We don't claim to be perfect - there is no global accreditation - but we've led the way since 2001 and screened 1000's of holidays. We invite every traveller to write a review about their experiences and responsible tourism. This valuable feedback is sent to the people who run the holidays. We keep a very close eye on it and take off holidays that don't live up to our standards. |
