Andalucia B&B accommodation in Alpujarra
An Andalucia B&B accommodation in Alpujarra with remarkable architecture, agreeable atmosphere and the richness of history. With a garden having her own spring, makes it a wonderful comfortable and exclusive bed and breakfast accommodation or B&B holiday lodging when on vacation, or travel past this scenic mountain village of Mairena in the beautiful valley of the Alpujarras.

Mairena is one of these villages where time ceases to exist. Where harvests and firewood are still hauled by a donkey. Where the shepherd with sheep and goats pass through the village. Where whitewashed houses seem organically formed. Where colourful flower pots and bougainvilleas hang down the facades and balconies. Where, except for a small bar and some shops, there is nothing more than tranquility, wonderful fresh air and plenty of wild nature. A very splendid environment for a memorable rural holiday.

Las Alpujarras is a valley which stretches from west to east on the southern slope of the Sierra Nevada. White villages are separated by regular distances of five to ten kilometres, at an average height of one thousand meters above sea level. Around the villages there is small scale agriculture. This gives the area a unique mixture of agricultural developed landscape, within unspoiled nature. There is always water, running down via an ingenious system of water canals dating from Moorish times.

The accommodation is equipped with three spacious bedrooms, with comfortable bathrooms, three salons of which two have a fireplace. One self-catering apartment with a roof terrace. Where absolute silence is to be enjoyed. The house is surrounded by a lovely walled garden with a variety of flowers, a lawn, two water basins and a kitchen garden. A place to linger or paint, write, read or just enjoying yourself in sun or shadow.

In the kitchen garden we grow all sorts of herbs and vegetables which are used in the carefully prepared meals, served with local wine or a choice of our wine collection. Weather permitting, dinner and breakfast are served on the terrace.

how this holiday makes a difference
We chose intentionally to live in a small community, where it is more possible to express our ecological way of life. Therefore we work with locals, buy locally, and preferable ecologically. We don’t waste water, recycle, make compost and don’t use pesticides or insecticides. We have an ecological garden and eco label on our products which we will sell to the ecological market. We minimize unnecessary car-use.

We grow our own organic fruit and vegetables, this year officially labeled to sell to the biological market, buy our groceries, eggs and meat locally and the house is restored with help local craftsmen and builders. All staff are employed locally. Where possible we take measures to educate staff & guests about environmental practices. We encourage our guests to spend locally and provide information about restaurants, activities etc.

We have a recycle program (compostmaking, re-use of plastic, separate non organic-garbage, etc.) We conserve water by water savers on taps, electricity by conscious consuming such as energy saving lightbulbs and induction cooking.

Guests are invited to help on the land, picking almonds or olives. The area is cleaned of litter to preserve the environment for, and to encourage, local wildlife. Our garden is a home for a rich variety of birds. We treat the garden and land outside the village according to organic (permaculture) practice.

Tourism can be good and bad for destinations & local people.

We carefully screen every holiday against our criteria for responsible travel.

'Look behind the brochure' to find how each holiday makes a difference (see left).

We don't claim to be perfect - there is no global accreditation - but we've led the way since 2001 and screened 1000's of holidays.

We invite every traveller to write a review about their experiences and responsible tourism.

This valuable feedback is sent to the people who run the holidays. We keep a very close eye on it and take off holidays that don't live up to our standards.
