how this holiday makes a difference
Our facility is the only one of its kind within the entire region. Our goal is to present natural beauty and unspoiled wildlife to those who appreciate a time when this was all there was. We strive to protect that in education and enjoyment for others, in some time due to what we do here this can spread in other places. The country of Costa Rica is quite small and can be very dependent on tourism and trade, so we hope by adding employment and funding to numerous projects within the community, such as infrastructure, and retail trade, this will help keep the economy stable and the desire to travel to the Caribbean side of the country.

We have school groups and religious organizations touring the waterfalls and nature trails on a weekly basis learning about the importance of being eco friendly along with publicly opening the means to conservation for the local community by keeping public areas clean and litter free with paid services and that concept flowing into the private lifestyle of the individual. Public transportation is now being provided to the mountain top communities due to our road improvements and rebuilding of the infrastructure in order to make access to the resort easier. We also pay into the business development funds that add to the education and employment of the local residents of which 95% of the work force at the resort is hired locally.

Our one year plan is to work from wind turbines and very little outside sources to produce electricity even if it is hydro powered. Minimizing the impact on the environment as little as possible is being done, such as self dissolving septic systems throughout the property and the replenishing of plants and trees in the developed areas. We are mountain side and our river is fed from daily rain water which is used for all sources in the resort. We do not divert or change any riverways in order to supply the property. Our minimizing plan starts with 50% use toilet and laundry equipment which is utilizing about 200 gallons per day for the entire resort at full capacity. All water pressures are set at a comfortable level but well below the average which we have preset and also encourage our guests to shower within a 10 minute timeframe each. Our cleaning supplies are all biodegradable and we use no aerosols on the property. We have a continual laundry plan for the resort, but for hygienic reasons we cannot cut this short but only for our longer term guests. We refrain from using chemicals on the grounds so not to pollute the river or ground water.

Our food waste is sent directly to the hog farmers within the general area for their food source. We also have a recycling plan for glass, plastics, and paper. We provide a full introduction to nature and conservation with all the guests upon arrival. We replenish trees and ground cover for whatever is removed in order to build. There has been a pond put in place of some vegetation in order to keep the wildlife coming into the grounds.

The resort does all of the purchases within the local communities, from building and hardware supplies to food for the restaurant and toiletries. The employed staff at the resort is from the surrounding area. We do not employ outside contractors or general labor unless there is a specific demand. The resort has housing on site for the employees that are in need of a place to stay throughout the work week due to logistics and travel time to and from work. With the rebuilding of the infrastructure, roads, drainage systems etc… the public transportation system is effectively running transport within the mountain villages. Siquirres is the only town with a high school within 40 miles due to the decency of the roadways. Most all of the taxation goes toward education in the local schools.

Tourism can be good and bad for destinations & local people.

We carefully screen every holiday against our criteria for responsible travel.

'Look behind the brochure' to find how each holiday makes a difference (see left).

We don't claim to be perfect - there is no global accreditation - but we've led the way since 2001 and screened 1000's of holidays.

We invite every traveller to write a review about their experiences and responsible tourism.

This valuable feedback is sent to the people who run the holidays. We keep a very close eye on it and take off holidays that don't live up to our standards.
