description
The hotel is at the decidedly contemporary end of 4 star hotels in Edinburgh. Think wide-screen TV, DVD and CD player in your room. Or the separate walk-in power showers. (No shower-over-bath-complications here.) In fact, just think of everything you could possibly expect from a 4 star hotel. Then add a little more.
Other 4 star hotels in Edinburgh may feel a twinge of envy at our location. The hotel is right in the core of Edinburgh's Old Town, with jealousy-inducing views of the Castle.
Shopping, the Royal Mile, Holyrood House, Dynamic Earth, Princes Street - and Edinburgh Castle itself - are all within easy reach. And the history of Scotland is everywhere you look.

special things to do and see here
Yu Time is our exclusive leisure and fitness destination - right next door at our sister hotel. And you're invited. We did say Yu means ‘hot water'. Let the heat of our sauna leave your skin and body feeling renewed. We also have a gym with some of the best computerised cardiovascular and resistance facilities around. Add LCD TVs to while away the metres, calories or reps, and you're in for a great work-out. Relax and exercise in style, in our stunning daylight-filled pool. Purified with ozone, you'll notice a distinct lack of bleachy whiffs - allowing you to enjoy your dip untroubled by stinging eyes.travellers' tales
We booked our hotel through Responsible Travel. It turned out to be an excellent choice. It has a superb location and by British standards offered good value for money. (more)
rooms, food and facilities
The hotel has free high speed, wireless, internet access. We think it makes a refreshing change to simply flip open your laptop - without emptying the contents of your wallet just to send a few emails. (Or indeed, having to hook up with cables - we have a wireless network.)
Of course, we have all the other facilities you'd expect from a contemporary hotel:24 hour room service Alarm calls Bar and restaurant Car park (At our sister hotel, close by) Concierge services Conference centre Mail and message delivery Pay movies DVDs Private dining Quiet library spaces Same day laundry Satellite TV CD/DVD Player
Baby friendly: Cots and high chairs available
Disabled access: Disabled access to rooms and public areas. Guide dog access
Weddings: Wedding reception venues in Edinburgh are either practical or picturesque - but rarely both. Choose the hotel as the venue for your day and you'll have the best of all worlds. We're an approved venue for civil weddings and partnerships. We're in a beautiful setting - the backdrop to your wedding breakfast will be the historic Grassmarket. And we've the space and facilities to make your day special, whether you're thinking small and intimate venue or large and spectacular.
By Air: From the airport just follow the city centre signs.
By Train: Waverley Station is just a 10 minute walk from the hotel. This takes you to the south of the station. However, most of our guests prefer to take the five minute taxi journey instead of walking - the approach can be quite hilly in parts.
By Car: If you are driving into Edinburgh the simplest way to get to the hotel is to head for Princes Street, Edinburgh's main street. You will immediately see the Castle and the Grassmarket is located directly behind it. Head for the west end of Princes Street, until the main junction with Lothian Road. Head up Lothian Road, then take the first left onto King's Stables Road. This road traces around the foot of Edinburgh Castle, then leads straight onto the Grassmarket - where you'll find the hotel.

how to find us
'Centrally located' doesn't quite do us justice; we really are in the heart of Edinburgh's historic Old Town. And our Grassmarket location means we're incredibly easy to find. By Air: From the airport just follow the city centre signs.

how this holiday makes a difference

The hotel is conscious that the actions of each and every one of us have an impact on the environment. This is the philosophy that everyone at the hotel works with, each and every day, to ensure we're doing our bit to build a sustainable future. We have a dedicated architect in charge of Sustainable Hotel Design to take advantage of environmental opportunities in our developments: The design of our Hotels is eco-friendly. The hotel is located in the city centre rather than using greenfield space. This also minimises wastage of energy and resources. Keycard systems control lighting, heating and air coolers when room not in use. Building management systems are in place to control temperatures throughout the building and existing lifts have been replaced with energy efficient lifts. Energy saving lighting, dimmers and motion detectors are in place.
We recycle paper, plastic, card board, glass, CDs, polythene wrappers, mobile phones, polystyrene, waste cooking oil, toner cartridges and dry cleaning coat hangers. We re-use towels on guest request. We provide newspapers on request to avoid wastage and recycle any spares. Daily monitoring of water/gas/electricity consumption occurs to aid reducing consumption levels. We donate soap bars to charity. We compact waste so less collections required. We have dual flush toilets to save water. We have energy efficient windows to improve thermal performance resulting in less of a requirement for heating in winter and air conditioning in summer. We have separate walk in showers to encourage guests to use the shower instead of the bath resulting in water saving. We re-use furniture and fittings after our refurbishments by donating to them local charities and businesses. We encourage car share and encourage cycle to work and have provided cycle rack facilities plus cycling discounts. We co-ordinate in advance staff taxi journeys and pick ups to minimise number of taxi journeys. We encourage local transport and provide information on their facilities. We purchase recycled goods and provide environmental awareness and training as part of the induction programme. We have a dedicated environmental group driving forward new initiatives. We use conference call phones between properties to minimise travel and our sales team promote our Green Tourism Business Scheme award and policy to clients. |
Tourism can be good and bad for destinations & local people. We carefully screen every holiday against our criteria for responsible travel. 'Look behind the brochure' to find how each holiday makes a difference (see left). We don't claim to be perfect - there is no global accreditation - but we've led the way since 2001 and screened 1000's of holidays. We invite every traveller to write a review about their experiences and responsible tourism. This valuable feedback is sent to the people who run the holidays. We keep a very close eye on it and take off holidays that don't live up to our standards. |
