special things to do and see here
Doing nothing but wandering in the extensive grounds or toasting by the wood burning stove makes for a wonderful retreat. The red squirrels feed off the kitchen windowsill, so wildlife watching begins before you've even ventured outside. Others may wish to be more adventurous and there is plenty at the site and nearby to suit all tastes. The lake and rivers are a focal point for fun on the site. Enjoy swimming in the lake or paddling around in canoes or the traditional coracles. Across the lake is a real sauna, built to a Finnish model; and like a real Finnish sauna, situated on the edge of the lake...

Wildlife watching, river walking, boating, camp fires and swimming in the lake are among favourite activities. There is also a woodland sauna, badminton, trampoline and indoor games room with pool and table tennis. The house situated in the Eden Valley, Cumbria, 13 miles east of Penrith. There are many local attractions and activities including horse riding, historic towns and houses, cycling and walking. The Lake District mountains are a short drive away.

Walking: Excellent walks from the house and nearby in and around the Eden Valley. Short distance to the Lake District for further walks and mountain climbing.

Cycling: Ideal base for cycling. The Cumbrian long distance cycle route runs past the gate.

  • how this holiday makes a difference
This Cumbria self catering accommodation is owned by the Wilson family and you are invited to be guests and to make it your home during your stay. This includes participating in the evolving journey of this place which inspires creativity and fun whilst respecting and supporting a rich natural environment.

Biodiversity and the conservation of flora and fauna are central. Visitors are invited to record their sightings of wildlife. Any developments to the house support preservation and the creation of biodiversity. The new coppice has been planted to supported biodiversity as well as create renewable fuel and craft materials for green wood working. Red squirrels nest, feed and play on the site.

The house was a 17th century corn mill harnessing power from the river Raven. This and the current urgent need to preserve the planet has led us to commit the house to be a show case of renewable, low environmental impact energy supplies. To date a coppice has been planted and engineers commissioned to consider options for the creation of sustainable energy from the site. The coppice was planted in the grounds to ensure a sustainable supply of local wood fuel through traditional coppicing practices. The coppice has been planted with bio diversity in mind rather than to maximise the biomass crop. The house is part heated by wood burning stoves supplied by wood from the site and nearby. One wood burning stove has recently been replaced by a high efficiency stove. Low energy light bulbs are used throughout, and we are currently working with Lancaster University to set up an experimental site to use siphonic hydro power methods to create electricity from the river.

Water is drawn from a local spring. Even though this is a local source we aim to reduce water usage and reduce the flush on the toilets. Plans for the site include using a reed bed for water disposal. Guests are educated and encouraged to recycle paper, cardboard, tins, glass and plastic and to compost. The housekeeper works hard to ensure proper recycling. All our domestic produces are eco friendly makes. The accommodation is a place to refresh the spirit. Guest are inspired to rest, play and be creative. A poetry trail is commissioned for 2008.

We are committed to traditional and artisan crafts. Guests are invited to use the traditional cord wood built woodland sauna and to use the traditional coracles on the lake. Plans include the building of two tree houses and three yurts. To date we have hosted two yurt making courses. These courses taught high standards of artisan craft and also were run with an ethos of community living and respect for people and the environment.

We value being a member of the local community and Renwick is a particularly lively and friendly village. The Parish Council supported our planning application to develop the mill.

Tourism can be good and bad for destinations & local people.

We carefully screen every holiday against our criteria for responsible travel.

'Look behind the brochure' to find how each holiday makes a difference (see left).

We don't claim to be perfect - there is no global accreditation - but we've led the way since 2001 and screened 1000's of holidays.

We invite every traveller to write a review about their experiences and responsible tourism.

This valuable feedback is sent to the people who run the holidays. We keep a very close eye on it and take off holidays that don't live up to our standards.
