Enjoy a stay in a historic colonial house in the heart of San Cristobal de las Casas, one of the most beautiful cities in Mexico. The house is more than 250 years old and close to the famous church of Santo Domingo and a short walk from both the colourful food market and craft market. The house has been restored preserving its original features including its genuine old brick floors and massive adobe walls. The rooms are spacious and surrounded by beautiful gardens despite being in the centre of town. You can step out and enjoy the town or take local transport to the nearby villages which offer you a fascinating insight into village life.
The area is famous for its beautiful weavings and you are close by the remarkable Sna Jolobil textile museum. There are many areas of outstanding beauty to visit and there is plenty of scope for the adventurous with the Lacandon Selva close by. You are perfectly situated for making day trips to fascinating places, such as Agua Azul and Palenque. In San Cristobal at night there are a wide variety of restaurants offering international and local cuisine and bars with dancing and live music.

The accommodation offers you the opportunity to stay in the heart of San Cristobal de las Casas in an historic colonial house. The house has been renovated using natural materials and local craftsmen to preserve its original features, brick floors and traditional adobe structure to remain in harmony with the historic centre of town.
We try and live by ecological principles and encourage our guests to use local markets and introduce them to organic vegetable growers and local weaving cooperatives that directly benefit the local producers. We recycle wherever possible and make compost for our gardens. The house was converted using local craftsmen and materials some of which have been recycled e.g. We found old wood where possible & reused old brick on the floor. All our employees are local people, and we try to use products from the region. The textiles have all been made locally. We expect some of the guests will be interested in taking Spanish lessons and we work with one of the language schools available (Casa en el arbol). We regularly organise special lunches for the Old People’s Home Casa de Ancianos and supply them with bakery goods. All guests are encouraged not to be wasteful with valuable resources such as water and respect the use of gas and electricity. We leave bins for recycling waste and give them information about local shops and markets. We use energy saving light bulbs. We also work with organic vegetable producers and put our guests in contact with them. The garden is organic and full of humming birds! We run a wholewheat bakery and own a restaurant in town and where possible use vegetables grown organically. There is now a thriving local organic market on Saturdays that we encourage our guests to use. Cheeses are available from Lacteos Maya, produced on farms in the area. |
Tourism can be good and bad for destinations & local people. We carefully screen every holiday against our criteria for responsible travel. 'Look behind the brochure' to find how each holiday makes a difference (see left). We don't claim to be perfect - there is no global accreditation - but we've led the way since 2001 and screened 1000's of holidays. We invite every traveller to write a review about their experiences and responsible tourism. This valuable feedback is sent to the people who run the holidays. We keep a very close eye on it and take off holidays that don't live up to our standards. |
