Co Cork B&B and self catering accommodation

A natural and simple, but comfortable extended farmhouse situated in a tranquil and natural setting. High up in the mountains yet sheltered by mature gardens overlooking the valley and distant Bantry Bay. An informal atmosphere is important to us; we want you to feel at home, at ease!

Contact with nature is an essential tool for relaxation! Our gardens invite you to come outside and explore. You may climb the mountain, walk the grounds, wander into the labyrinth or simply sit quietly in one of the many hidden ‘nooks and crannies’.

Soak up the intense silence and the abounding natural energy: ‘Sit still and the grass grows by itself’. Even being inside you are still in contact with the natural surroundings; our lounge/relaxation room has a wall to wall window, allowing panoramic views of the gardens, valley and distant ocean. Your own bedroom door opens directly into the garden and breakfast and your delicious vegetarian meals are served in the conservatory, sitting under the old vine, looking out onto the distant ocean. Vegetable for our meals come as much as possible form our own organic garden or the local organic market.

travellers' tales
Most memorable were the rejuvenating and refreshing treatments and the company of fellow-holiday makers; we all sat around a big table at mealtimes and shared a bottle of wine.  (more)

how this holiday makes a difference
Fred and Janny have been living at the farm for over 25 years. Their children have grown up here, and nearly all run their own business in the Bantry area. They are deeply embedded in the local community and local economy. They employ local people, and I mean literally staff from two houses down the road as well as from the immediate Bantry area. The therapists that work for the farm often received their training from the ITEC registered Holistic Health College of which Janny is the course director.

Janny is also involved in the Bantry Retirement Organisation in the position of teacher handing on knowledge of healthy living and the benefit of holistic therapies. Fred and Janny have been involved with the international Wwoofer organisation for years. They share their holistic knowledge and lifestyle as well as local Irish culture with their volunteers. Most of the building and repairs to the farm and the land are done with the help of local tradesmen and farmers if necessary. Our buildings and their surroundings sow respect for nature and preserve natural features as much as possible.

The gardens at our Co Cork B&B and self catering accommodation play a very important role, inviting people to spend time outside in nature. Contact with nature is seen as an essential part of living and encouraged at all times. Education and information on healthy/holistic living is, in a natural, spontaneous way integrated in our daily activities. Guest can avail of health promoting treatments and courses. We offer short, certificate and longer and diploma courses in subject related to holistic health and living. Subjects covered include vegetarian cookery, health & healing courses, yoga-meditation courses, labyrinth courses and creative courses.

We separate our waste. Garden waste is composted as well as kitchen waste. Some of our neighbours have pigs and they take food stuffs as well. Bantry has a small recycling centre where we bring glass, dink cans, food cans. The next centre is in Ballydehob where we recycle cardboard, paper and plastic wrappings. This centre also takes batteries and electrical equipment from the farm that has needed replacement.

Fred teaches vegetarian cooking at the farm and sources as many of his products locally as possible. The conservatory of the Farm has a wonderful, old grape vine that gives fruit in the summer as well as shade. Healthy, organic food is essential for our well being. Home made and/or home grown food, is freshly prepared every day. We have a large organic garden where we grow in season as much as possible our own food. The rest of our food what we buy in is also as much as possible organic and or locally grown. All our meals are vegetarian.

We use eco friendly cleaning products. Bedding and other materials used are as much as possible made of natural fibres. We have a solar heating system for our hot water. Using the power of the sun, we try to reduce our dependency on traditional fossil fuels. The under-floor heating in the house is low-temperature reducing the need for energy. In the living room we have a stove that supplements our heating. The conservatory that Fred & Janny added to the house catches the sun and the thermal effect of the heated air is used to warm the remainder of the house. A large expanse of glass on the south side does the same for most of the upstairs rooms.

We have a reed bed to cleanse our waste. The new self catering unit is plastered with natural hemp and has a sod roof. We bring awareness and environmental/natural consciousness to the tourists and tourist trade in the area.

Tourism can be good and bad for destinations & local people.

We carefully screen every holiday against our criteria for responsible travel.

'Look behind the brochure' to find how each holiday makes a difference (see left).

We don't claim to be perfect - there is no global accreditation - but we've led the way since 2001 and screened 1000's of holidays.

We invite every traveller to write a review about their experiences and responsible tourism.

This valuable feedback is sent to the people who run the holidays. We keep a very close eye on it and take off holidays that don't live up to our standards.
