description
This charming nineteenth century Provençal ‘mas’ is situated in the district of Grasse known as Saint Antoine. The property is semi-detached but the large enclosed garden, 3500m², is very secluded. The garden is delightful; it is south facing and has many exotic trees such as palms, mandarin, kaki (Sharon fruit) and figs. The swimming pool is in a lovely setting and is particularly large for a private house. It has a security alarm. There is a large terrace around the pool and another terrace for outdoor dining next to the house. There is an electronic gateway and parking within the property.

The interior is of a simple standard and we think it has an old-fashioned charm. It is furnished with traditional country furniture as well as new beds and the house has modern advantages such as air-conditioning in both the bedrooms and Wi-Fi for people who want to take a lap-top on holiday. We always have happy clients at this property: it is in a great location and represents excellent value for money.
rooms, food and facilities
On the ground floor there is a kitchen with 4-ring hob and oven, and fridge-freezer. This room has an attractive old fireplace. The kitchen leads through to a dining area and a few steps up from here is the sitting room. This is a small room with comfortable seating and a satellite television with English channels. There is a DVD and a CD player. Also on the ground floor, there is a bathroom with a short bath i.e. one you would sit up in, hand-held shower and washing machine. There is a separate W.C. On the first floor, there is a large bedroom with a wide double bed, 160cm. Bedroom two is on the second floor, accessible up an open-tread staircase unprotected on one side. It is another good-sized room and has twin beds. Next to this bedroom is a small room which may be used as a study/office.

The house is in an excellent location conveniently situated for walking to local shops. It is about 1km from the nearest restaurant, La Bastide Saint Antoine, which is famous throughout France (lovely but very expensive!). The centre of Grasse, world famous for its perfumes, is about 2km. Grasse now has an excellent rail connection to the coast; there is a large free car park at the station and regular trains go to Cannes and along the coast.

The property is well placed for visiting the medieval village of St Paul de Vence, made famous by artists such as Bonnard and Picasso, and home to the Maeght Foundation, with its superb modern art collection. There are many other pretty villages to visit nearby such as Biot, Tourettes-sur-Loup and Gourdon, and the spectacular scenery of the Gorges du Loup is not to be missed. There is a golf course 5km, and the nearest beach is about 15km at Mandelieu.

how this holiday makes a difference
This 19th century property is traditionally furnished and locally sourced materials have been used where possible; Provençal fabrics for soft furnishings, locally produced tiles for the pool area and stones from the surrounding region for the dry stone walls. The beautiful garden, which is full of a wide variety of plants including fruit trees, is maintained by a local man and watered from a well. The property is ideally situated; the garden provides an oasis of peace in a lively town; but it is easy to walk to local shops and the famous restaurant ‘La Bastide Saint Antoine’ is just 1km away. The owner will be happy to give information on where to buy organic food, non-touristic places to visit, walks, recycling points for paper, plastic and glass etc. Kitchen waste (uncooked) may be added to the composter in the garden.

Grasse has an excellent public transport system; there is free parking at the railway station from which there are regular connections to Cannes and towns along the coast, and there are bus services to Nice and Cannes, as well as many of the smaller villages. The owner can advise on opportunities to explore without using the car all the time.

The area is perfect for art enthusiasts; the medieval village of St Paul de Vence was made famous by artists such as Bonnard and Picasso, and is home to the Maeght Foundation with its superb modern art collection. Many contemporary artists are attracted to the region, so there is always a variety of exhibitions to go and see. There are some examples of local art on display in the house.

Grasse is famous for its perfume industry, and a guided tour of one of the perfume factories is highly recommended in order to appreciate the history and importance of perfume manufacture in the town. Other aspects of the town’s history are covered in a series of guided themed visits - the Tourist Information Office has further details.

There are several easy walks starting in the hills above Grasse which offer magnificent views over the Cote d’Azur, from Mandelieu to the Baie des Anges at Nice. Also there are several hikes in the nearby countryside of the ‘Pays de Grasse’ - itineraries are available from the Tourist Information Office.

Summer visitors can participate in various local festivals, including ‘La Fête du Jasmin’ which takes place during the first weekend of August. There are parades, battles of flowers and the crowning of Miss Jasmine. ‘Bio Grasse’ is a vast market of Organic products which takes place in September.

We support a range of charities and projects in France and worldwide which provide aid to vulnerable communities and habitats, e.g. ASSOHUMA, a French charity which organises trips taking humanitarian and medical aid to women in Afghanistan and families in remote Sénégal; Shared Interest, a co-operative lending society which provides funding for Third World producers.

Our office in Devon is in a redundant agricultural building which we re-built using reclaimed, traditional materials. We support the Devon Wildlife Trust and we have nest boxes and feeding stations in the office grounds to encourage the birds. Our water for the office comes from a spring and is pumped by a water-powered ram. We do not produce a paper brochure; our bookings and enquiries are handled by email and all our office paper and printing cartridges are re-cycled. Our shredded documents go on the compost heap.

Tourism can be good and bad for destinations & local people.

We carefully screen every holiday against our criteria for responsible travel.

'Look behind the brochure' to find how each holiday makes a difference (see left).

We don't claim to be perfect - there is no global accreditation - but we've led the way since 2001 and screened 1000's of holidays.

We invite every traveller to write a review about their experiences and responsible tourism.

This valuable feedback is sent to the people who run the holidays. We keep a very close eye on it and take off holidays that don't live up to our standards.
