description
Cornwall self catering accommodation for 10 people
The main room of the Barn is 50 feet long, with big double doors at the kitchen end, opening onto a stone terrace and looking over the orchard. The big sofa at the other end looks out over the farm-yard. Beyond it is another room with more sofas and the woodburner. The kitchen is beautifully equipped and the beds are comfortable. Most people say ‘Wow!!’ as they walk in, and then tell us it is even better then they had expected.

We welcome couples on their own, who revel in all the space, and at the opposite extreme we have had 6 or more children plus parents. Groups of musicians have found us an inspirational and creative space.

  • how this holiday makes a difference
Our organic farm provides a wonderful setting for our barn. This is a working farm, where our philosophy is to leave this beautiful part of the world in a better state then when we came here. To that end we farm to encourage wildlife, and we encourage our visitors to walk the farm with us and question us as we tell them about what we are doing here.

Our barn was converted 12 years ago using many recycled materials (eg. old slate floors, old beams and floor boards). It is insulated to a very high standard and the radiators are cast-iron so they retain heat well. We have switched to Eco-tricity as our suppliers. An extra-large shower encourages visitors to shower in pairs, or with several children together! We encourage our visitors to recycle by giving them a compost bin and recycling bags with clear instructions. We are planning on giving them a wormery. We provide ecover washing materials and eco-balls for the washing machine. We provide drying space above the Aga and encourage them to use the Clearview wood-burner that uses wood from our hedgerows to minimise the use of heating oil.

The RSPB have surveyed our farm and found it full of bird-life. We are also active with our local wild-life group who often organise walks and surveys here. We look after our stretch of river where we have otters. We encourage our visitors to shop locally (as we do) by providing a detailed list of local outlets. We give our visitors a welcome hamper of local produce, including locally made soap. The cream tea is local and / or home-made. We employ local cleaners. We participate in our local community activities. I am a Governor at our little Primary school (50 pupils). We have a fund-raising Barn Dance here most years and raise money for the local Childrens’ Hospice. We help out with tractors and trailers when needed for village events.

Tourism can be good and bad for destinations & local people.

We carefully screen every holiday against our criteria for responsible travel.

'Look behind the brochure' to find how each holiday makes a difference (see left).

We don't claim to be perfect - there is no global accreditation - but we've led the way since 2001 and screened 1000's of holidays.

We invite every traveller to write a review about their experiences and responsible tourism.

This valuable feedback is sent to the people who run the holidays. We keep a very close eye on it and take off holidays that don't live up to our standards.
