description
In one of the most beautiful places in the world, the magical Santorini, and in a biological estate of 1.500 sq. m. between the capital, Fira and the traditional settlement of Oia, a windmill was built by Nestor, an ex Olympic Airways pilot, and designed by his wife, Fotini, an architect. They live in their own windmill on an upper hillside terrace and caretake the property in a personalised yet unobtrusive way.
The uniqueness of the landscape with the surrounding vineyards, the chromatic alternation of the sea, the ampleness of the sky and the Cycladic architecture meet in order to offer you unforgettable moments of relaxation and welfare.
Staying in a windmill is an escape from reality, a trip to fantasy, a perfect co- existence of minimal design without compromises in luxury and modern comforts based on the simple elegance and sophisticated style fully covering even the most demanding visitors. The windmill is surrounded by sloping, sun-baked hillsides, terraced vineyards, olive trees and wide open skies with panoramic views from every window over the bright blue Aegean sea. You have your own garden of seasonal vegetables where you can help yourself to figs, Indian figs, tomatoes, aubergines, eggplants, cucumbers and other ingredients for a healthy Mediterranean meal.
The ground floor with the small luminous windows and the panoramic view of the vineyards, the sea and the swimming pool consists of the living room, the dining room and the kitchen. Everything is made in a very ergonomic way, using ecological colours in pastel tones creating a sensation of well-being. On the way to the first and second floor, the staircase climbs around the mill's walls creating sculptural forms. The first-floor bedroom with the romantic ambiance welcomes you to an inbuilt double bed comprising of an ecological mattress - upper mattress, feathery pillows and a wonderful bathroom are all provided for your rest, relaxation, dreams and loving moments. Don't forget to leave one of the shutters open if you want to see the sun rising from the sea.
Surprises continue and reach their peak on the second floor in the cone-shaped room. A double inbuilt bed and a single one, which can be used as a couch too, offer you additional space to move freely in the room or relax and gaze the islands of the Aegean Sea, the islands of Ios, Naxos, Amorgos and Anafi. The bathroom is especially pretty as well. The circular architecture of the mill forms great spaces creating positive feng-shui. The traditional colourful cement floors and bathrooms as well as the pastel colours give a different sensation to the facilities.
We are always available to provide you information about our island. Images and wonderful scents shall accompany you forever and the views of our island shall make you want to stay there forever. A paradise in the arms of the Aegean Sea is waiting for you.

how this holiday makes a difference
|
We support the local community by giving charity to the church of the nearby Vourvoulos village which provides help to poor people. We do this three times a year. We encourage our guests to visit local attractions such as music events, theatres, and ecclesiastic fiestas. We encourage guests to eat at captain John's fish tavern, 800meters away from the windmill, at Pori small harbour. We also suggest buying local products from the neighbour Mrs. Stella such as fava beans, dry tomatoes, caper and local wine.
We use solar system to heat the water and energy efficient light bulbs and appliances. We turn off the lights and turn appliances off stand by when not in use. We have locks on rooms that turn off appliances when guests go out except refrigerator. We use low energy consumption, A category, for the electrical devices. For the offset of carbon emission we have planted a lot of trees and plants. We collect rainwater for use in the house. All the plants and the garden vegetables grow up without any water (the volcanic ground keeps the nightly moisture). We have 100 m3 underground water tank to collect rainwater. We have showers and half flush toilets. We change seats and towels and we clean the house once a week. We use Korres natural products for shampoo and shower gel and we plan to use more eco-cleaning products. We use only animal manure for the garden from mules and biological fertilizer products. We make compost from garden and kitchen waste. We leave an area of our garden uncut for beautiful spring flowers like margaritas, poppies, etc. We feed food waste to the stray dogs and cats. We recycle plastic, glass and paper. We only use internet for our reservations so we do not use any paper and we do that from our home. We employ 2 women for cleaning the house, one of them is from Fira town and the other one from Oia village. We also use 2 men for gardening and they are from Pori village. We buy local products from our neighbours such as tomatoes, cucumbers, eggplants, figs, Indian figs, caper, fava beans, organic cheese and meat. Also we cultivate our own vegetable garden behind the windmill. In addition in our field we have figs, Indian figs, olive trees, tomatoes, cucumbers, onions, zucchinis, eggplants and a lot of grapes. We use local services for construction. We use Antonis Fitros and his team from Pyrgos village. We use the electrician Mr Pantelis from Messaria and the plumper Mr Stathis from Emporio. We use always the same people. |
Tourism can be good and bad for destinations & local people. We carefully screen every holiday against our criteria for responsible travel. 'Look behind the brochure' to find how each holiday makes a difference (see left). We don't claim to be perfect - there is no global accreditation - but we've lead the way since 2001 and screened 1000's of holidays. We invite every traveller to write a review about their experiences and responsible tourism. This valuable feedback is sent to the people who run the holidays. We keep a very close eye on it and take off holidays that don't live up to our standards. |
