description
At our Patagonia lodge & spa we are looking to deliver experiences in a space of wild beauty; a place of fjords, native forests, rivers, waterfalls, mountains and glaciers.

We receive all travellers that venture to this uninhabited corner of Chilean Patagonia, where birds, porpoises, and sea lions roam, and offer the necessary ingredients so that each visitor may discover their own secret, South of Silence.

Along Chile’s Austral Road the Andes mountain range are ever present, and native forests quilt its slopes. Eternal snows cover the peaks, and the land is interwoven with glaciers, fjords, rivers and channels. 1250 km of nature at its purest!! In the solitude of the Americas, in a land that continues to be untamed and where nature remains pristine, you’ll find an as yet undiscovered destination.

Amidst exuberant vegetation and accessible only by sea, lies a unique space where sophistication and simplicity harmoniously combine. The lodge and its staff warmly welcome their guests and invite them to explore and experience the stunning wilderness of Chilean Patagonia. Numerous excursions like hiking through the temperate forest of Queulat National Park, mountain biking on the Carretera Austral, kayaking on the Patagonian Fjords or even Whale Watching are offered, and afterwards, back at the lodge enjoy the rejuvenating thermal waters of the Spa. The experience culminates with a cruise aboard the catamaran Patagonia Express, through canals and austral fjords to Laguna San Rafael and its awe-inspiring glacier.
special things to do and see here
Kayaking in the Patagonian Channels, San Rafael Glacier or Whalewatching on board of our luxury catamaran, hot spring, spa, Thalassotherapie.

Spa: The complete spa is located at the opposite side of the hotel. This is where all three types of water: fresh water from atop the mountains, hot spring water from deep inside the Earth, and briny water from the sea, all come together in one place. The spa also has excellent equipment for treatments and relaxation massages. Enjoy its large hydro massage pool, jacuzzis, spring-water fountain, and steam sauna, and then reap the benefits of thalassotherapy sessions, relaxation massages, and facial treatments.
rooms, food and facilities
Our Patagonia lodge & spa has 29 commodious superior rooms with balcony and sea view and 1 exclusive captain’s chamber. Restaurant, bar, snackbar in the pool area, 3 outdoor thermal pools, well equipped spa, luxury catamaran, motor-vessel, kayaks, mountain bikes, hiking trails, laundry, only one internet station, etc.

Family & baby friendly: Children are always happy in the pools. But we wanted to offer something different and initiated this year a childcare on a small isle in front of our lodge, where children can degree as a “Protector of Patagonia”. They learn about history, plants and wildlife of the region and will be skilled in ecology and recycling. We have cradles for babies.

Disabled access: Most places of the lodge are accessible to wheelchairs but only the excursions on the catamaran are accomplishable on wheels.
how to find our Patagonia lodge & spa
Only accessible by sea. Nearest airport Balmaceda 220 km – about 5 hours driving along the most beautiful Carrretera Austral. To the north you find a little pier where we pick up our passengers that arrive by car.
how this holiday makes a difference
Located in one of the last really pristine places on earth, we feel a great responsibility about our environment. We want to transmit this feeling to the guests at our Patagonia lodge & spa and hope they will carry it to their usual lives and homes. Although the lodge & spa is geographically a totally isolated place, we are proud to have become an integrated part of the local community.

If its possible we try to use services, and manpower from the region. But it’s not easy in the most depopulated area in Chile. Local community is involved especially in group and incentive activities. We usually support local fundraising in Puerto Puyuhuapi. Last time we donated money was for the first ambulance. Normally we participate on cultural events in the south of Chile. For example the “Semanas Musicales de Fruillar”.

We provide different excursions for our guest to the Queulat National park and Puerto Puyuhuapi, where we visit a local carpet factory with a unique handcraft. A local from Puerto Puyuhuapi provides transfer services for our guests. Our complete central heating system is working with geothermic energy from our hot spring. Hot water is coming directly from the hot spring. What we don't use goes directly into the sea. But we try hard to pollute as little water as possible.

Apart from the geothermic energy we have a hydraulic turbine but it is working only if the water pressure is high enough, being very sensitive if rain amount lowers. We use only energy saving lamps. We have not much electronic equipment in our lodge. There are no televisions, stereos etc in the guest area.

Recyclable waste is transported once the year to Puerto Montt for recycling. Non recyclable waste goes to the official landfill. Recyclable waste means paper, plastics, metal, etc. In our sales office in Santiago we recycle paper for charity - a catholic baby care organization.

For constructions we used mostly wood collected from the surrounded forest. In our rooms are some guidelines for general behaviour. Further our guides capacitate our pioneers (that's how we call our guests) during the excursions. This year we initiated a childcare on a small isle in front of our lodge, where children can degree as a “Protector of Patagonia”. They learn about history, plants and wildlife of the region and will be skilled in ecology and recycling. Touristic development is very important in this area. The timber and mining industry is very strong in Chile.

We always like to work with local people. A lot of people from Puerto Puyuhuapi had their first job in our lodge and some of them stayed and became part of the family. Rodrigo Salas (head of guides) and Heidi Millalonco (head of administration) have started working here on their school holidays and are indispensable employees now. About 25% of the lodges employees are from Puerto Puyuhuapi. But it is not easy to get workers in an area that’s average population is 1 person per 2 km², as well as there is a lack of English-speaking people.

Our restaurant is specialized in local meals. A lot of fish and seafood is from the area. Rarely we serve tropic fruits, instead a lot of different wild berries etc. Further we have a Green house. But we can only produce a small part of what’s needed – mostly herbs, spices but also some vegetables as lettuce, spinach, etc. Gerardo, from Puyuhuapi, does our local transfers to the different areas of Queulat National Park. Eligio, from Puyuhuapi, does our plumbing work.

Tourism can be good and bad for destinations & local people.

We carefully screen every holiday against our criteria for responsible travel.

'Look behind the brochure' to find how each holiday makes a difference (see left).

We don't claim to be perfect - there is no global accreditation - but we've led the way since 2001 and screened 1000's of holidays.

We invite every traveller to write a review about their experiences and responsible tourism.

This valuable feedback is sent to the people who run the holidays. We keep a very close eye on it and take off holidays that don't live up to our standards.
