  • how this holiday makes a difference
The goal at our Osa Peninsula vacation accommodation is to be an example, to give back to our communities and, to work together to preserve the natural heritage of Corcovado for future generations.

We make a monthly donation to the "Corcovado Foundation" to help support projects that this organization undertakes to save endangered wildlife and promote conservation in the Osa Peninsula. More than 80% of our staff is from the local community; this helps support and offer economical options to over 30 families. The people from our area can see that conservation and eco-tourism can provide a good income while protecting our environment for our children and for the future.

We are proud to be such an important part of preserving Corcovado for future generations and providing an example of sustainable and responsible tourism. In our gift shop we offer items handmade by national as well as local artisans to help support their art as well as temporary tattoos that fund conservation in the Osa. We also have post cards made by the children of our local school in Drake Bay. We use compact fluorescent light bulbs of low consumption. Also our buildings have been designed to take advantage of the natural light. We promote in our central (San José) office, in Sierpe and in our hotel practices to save water and electricity. All our offices use recycled paper.

Ariel view of the accommodation groundsWe use alternative energy sources such as solar panels to produce electric energy, solar convection / propane gas hot water system, sun drying of clothes in a special transparent roofed building and storage of energy in battery banks for night time use. All of our installations both for our guests and employees are identified with plaques for increased safety and to promote conservation.

There are also signs around the grounds and surrounding areas to encourage healthy interaction with the wildlife and the environment. We use plastic crates to transport vegetables and other products to our hotel to lessen the amount of cardboard boxes that are used.

Bath amenities are biodegradable and in recyclable packaging. We also use dispensers. We educate our clients and our employees about sustainability, safety and conservation of the environment and resources such as electricity and water. During your stay with us you can help us to protect the Osa Peninsula and our planet.

We offer horseback riding where you can observe nature and the wildlife with our neighbour, Gregorio Alemán, or visit the local farm, "Claro Del Bosque", where our neighbours will be your hosts, offering you a look at Costa Rica and its customs. We hope you will also enjoy our reception centre, "La Hacienda", in Sierpe built in the style of a typical Costa Rican "Hacienda" and decorated with photographs and elements that preserve that tradition.

Tourism can be good and bad for destinations & local people.

We carefully screen every holiday against our criteria for responsible travel.

'Look behind the brochure' to find how each holiday makes a difference (see left).

We don't claim to be perfect - there is no global accreditation - but we've led the way since 2001 and screened 1000's of holidays.

We invite every traveller to write a review about their experiences and responsible tourism.

This valuable feedback is sent to the people who run the holidays. We keep a very close eye on it and take off holidays that don't live up to our standards.
