introduction to Umbria hotel, 15th century country hotel, Italy

Every Italian and perhaps every foreign visitor too is convinced of the spectacular beauty of Umbria. This wonderful region always has further marvels to unveil and we have discovered an unspoiled part, high in the Tiber Valley and transformed it into a unique resort.

Our Umbria hotel is a rural house of outstanding character, far away from common hotels of rustic appearance and pompous furniture, offering in contrast a discreet and sober elegance. We are situated on the edge of the village of Pietralunga, surrounded by a delicate countryside and uncontaminated woods. The house has been completely redesigned to offer seven spacious lodges for guests. Love for detail is expressed in relaxing colours, in-style furniture with comfortable sofas and fireplaces in all common lounges. Every particular has been studied to realise an elegant and welcoming ambience.

You will appreciate this distinguished and impeccable style also in our service. The cuisine is one of the assets of the site. The delicious restaurant, converted from an old barn, offers the opportunity to enjoy smooth freshly prepared plates with the local farming and breeding products.
special things to do and see at our Umbria hotel
Our cellar offers a wide choice of regional wines. You might be tempted therefore to spend most part of your holiday in complete relaxation in the quiet elegance of the country house. And of course if you do decide to venture out you can also enjoy the wild environment and the unspoiled nature of Valle del Carpina, an enchanted place that has still the privilege of being modestly secret.

Walking & cycling: We provide detailed guides and maps for hiking and cycling in the surrounding area.

  • how this holiday makes a difference
Umbria hotel, valley viewMy family and I moved from Rome to this surprising area in 2002.

We bought the abandoned former house of the Marquis Patrizi with the intention of restoring it and creating a comfortable place where guests can have a privileged base to explore the magical and historical atmosphere of the Umbrian towns and discover the uncontaminated colourful forests of the Valle del Carpina.

My father Paolo, a former architect and now the chef, made sure that all the projects of the restoration of the house focused on protecting the environment and saving power as much as possible. We are founding members (and I am the president) of an association which aims to promote responsible tourism in the area of the Valle del Carpina. I have attended recently a 3 month course “Green and cultural tourism in Northern Umbria” promoted by Regione Umbria.

Since opening our Umbria hotel in 2005 we have employed two/three local ladies year round. We provide local area information to our guests and are pleased to suggest tailored itineraries in the area. We also sponsored the publishing of a recipe book which collects all the traditional recipes (in Italian and English) of this area of the Umbrian/Marche Appennines.

Our property strictly applies policies to save energy and protect our environment. The house was renovated in 2005 focusing on saving energy and keeping insulated the interior (in summer, when the outside temperature is over 30°, our lobby natural temperature is 22/23°). We do not use diesel or liquid gas to warm up the house (1100 square meters), but wooden pellets. Hot water is produced by solar panels. All kitchen equipments are class A+ rating and low power consumption.

We ask to our guests to re-use towels and encourage them to save electricity and water. We use low-consumption bulbs and apply filters to taps to reduce the waste of water. We also recycle paper, metal, plastic and glass and have two own composters to reduce the organic garbage and have fertilizer for our flowers. Food scraps are used to feed animals of our neighbours. In order to reduce the waste of paper in our office we use always both sides of the sheets. We also use rechargeable ink cartridge for fax and printer.

We are delighted to offer to our restaurant clients fresh local products such as jams, wines, truffles, olive oil etc. We also resell the same products. We are proud to offer a selection of more than 50 Umbrian wines. Our wine list is made exclusively of Umbrian wines.

Tourism can be good and bad for destinations & local people.

We carefully screen every holiday against our criteria for responsible travel.

'Look behind the brochure' to find how each holiday makes a difference (see left).

We don't claim to be perfect - there is no global accreditation - but we've led the way since 2001 and screened 1000's of holidays.

We invite every traveller to write a review about their experiences and responsible tourism.

This valuable feedback is sent to the people who run the holidays. We keep a very close eye on it and take off holidays that don't live up to our standards.
