description
This self catering cottage is located in the centre of the picturesque village of Shorwell, approximately 2 miles from the sea. Whilst recently modernised, the property dates back to 1700. The cottage has a delightful garden with a little brook running along its full length.
On the ground floor there is a large sitting room. The fully fitted kitchen comes complete with cooking range, washing machine/tumble dryer and microwave. Upstairs, there are three bedrooms (1 king-size with en-suite, 1 twin, 1 bunk bed), and a bathroom (with toilet, basin, bath with shower fitting).
The cottage is furnished to a high standard and Wi-Fi internet access is available on request. With double-glazing and a gas central heating system, the cottage is ideal for holidays and short breaks all year round.
Shorwell nestles in a wooded valley, encircled by hills. The village has three manor houses and many thatched and stone built picturesque cottages. The village has a pub, The Crown Inn, which dates back to the 16th century. The pub has a lovely brook running through its garden (the same one as the cottage, which is directly opposite). The oldest part of the village is known as Westview and is close to the church of St Peter. The church itself dates back to the 12th century. The village also boasts a post office, refronted in Georgian style.

how this holiday makes a difference
We offer visitors a real taste of the Isle of Wight. In partnership with a local company, we supply our guests with a welcome pack of locally sourced produce including milk, butter, eggs, bread, jam, country cake, apple juice and IOW Crystal spring water. Guests are also treated to the luxurious IOW Lavender soap and shower gel in the bathroom and ensuite. We support Gift to Nature – an island project that gives visitors and locals alike the chance to get closer to nature. Our membership is used to improve the natural environment, looking after some of our most precious island wildlife such as the red squirrel and the rare Wall lizard. In our own garden, guests can relax by our crystal clear brook that has its source a few hundred metres away in NorthCourt. Enjoy the birdlife as well – we supply a variety of bird food and it is a treat to watch the birds on the feeders just outside the kitchen door! We have a strong environmental ethic and actively encourage guests to support us in this. We reward guests travelling to the island without cars by arranging and funding ferry tickets if they travel as foot passengers. Leaflets are provided with local walks and cycle routes and guests can store cycles securely in the garage. From our feedback forms we know that guests appreciate our recycling efforts. Clearly labelled containers are provided inside and out to help guests dispose of glass, paper and metal cans and a compost bin is provided for kitchen waste. Around 50% of the light bulbs are low energy and we are gradually replacing the rest as funds allow. We advise visitors (via a folder in the cottage) how they can help us save energy by turning off lights, using the microwave rather than the cooker, not filling the kettle, not leaving appliances on standby etc. We have two water butts and we have notices that remind our guests not to waste water, e.g. when cleaning their teeth. Guests are asked to only place wet or dirty towels & linen in the laundry basket and only these are washed. We employ a cleaner/caretaker, window cleaner and gardener all from the local area (i.e. next village of Brighstone). |
Tourism can be good and bad for destinations & local people. We carefully screen every holiday against our criteria for responsible travel. 'Look behind the brochure' to find how each holiday makes a difference (see left). We don't claim to be perfect - there is no global accreditation - but we've led the way since 2001 and screened 1000's of holidays. We invite every traveller to write a review about their experiences and responsible tourism. This valuable feedback is sent to the people who run the holidays. We keep a very close eye on it and take off holidays that don't live up to our standards. |
