how this holiday makes a difference
|
We contribute to the Floating Classroom that teaches kids of the marine environment and how to protect it and the animals that live there. We are also involved in the production of a big Marine Conservation Art Exhibition and the publishing of a book that teaches children of the islands and why it is important to protect the environment. We make visits to schools on the importance of tourism and why we should try to go green. We also hold lectures at the hotel that introduce guests to the flora, fauna, religion, music, history, foods of our islands.
Our staff are trained on the importance of conservation. We also carry out training workshops that benefit all in the industry not just our staff. We have a network of small local farmers and fishermen that produce organic foods. We encourage staff to use local food when ever possible. We participate in Beach clean ups. We use rain filled tanks to water plants, beach pipes and for general cleaning. Toilet tanks are fitted with water conservation bags. Signs posed for laundry on a need to basis. All bulbs in the hotel are energy savers and hot water is solar. Rooms sealed for maximum efficiency with air condition units. Signs posted to remind guest to conserve electricity. We are located on the beach and work with the Port Authority and Coast Guard to police reefs for illegal spare fishing and seine fishing. We are a member of Carib Whale, an organisation that supports marine mammal conservation and non-invasive whale and dolphin watching. The hotel has its own organic garden and produces all fresh herbs and supplies fruit for hotel use. We also try to buy as much as possible organic foods. We also purchase cleaning products that are environmentally friendly. Any building done waste is disposed of with the environment in mind. |
Tourism can be good and bad for destinations & local people. We carefully screen every holiday against our criteria for responsible travel. 'Look behind the brochure' to find how each holiday makes a difference (see left). We don't claim to be perfect - there is no global accreditation - but we've led the way since 2001 and screened 1000's of holidays. We invite every traveller to write a review about their experiences and responsible tourism. This valuable feedback is sent to the people who run the holidays. We keep a very close eye on it and take off holidays that don't live up to our standards. |
