how this holiday makes a difference
Our properties are located in one of the most beautiful unspoilt regions of Mauritius, and we are at the gateway to The Domaine du Chasseur National park and conservation area. Visitors to Mauritius who choose to stay in locations away from (but with easy access) to the popular tourist spots of the Island, will be rewarded with an insight into the 'real Mauritius' and experience the culture, and the traditional lifestyle of local villagers and fishermen, that many tourists will never witness in the resorts and coastal areas of the Island. Many of our neighbours living in these rural areas are the friendliest and most welcoming people you would ever wish to meet.

By choosing a holiday at our accommodation you will have made a positive contribution to preserving this rural environment, by sustaining employment and helping us through your patronage to regenerate our local village of Anse Jonchee and the local coast and countryside.

We encourage you to support and preserve our community and local environment by helping us in practising 'Responsible Tourism'. During your stay in Mauritius, whilst exploring the Island, you will no doubt be saddened to find that poverty and unequal opportunities exist on the Island, alongside hotels and large apartment complexes catering to a very wealthy section of society, unfortunately such conditions exist, and we acknowledge that the income derived from first-class tourism is a major contribution to the country's economy. However it is our belief and company policy that all tourist revenue should in part benefit the whole community and therefore within our business we strive to offer employment to locals in need of a job. We actively support government retraining programmes and sponsor unemployed people in training.

We support our local village through encouraging our guests to shop locally in the village boutiques, to attend Sega Parties which we organise by employing local musicians. Few tourists to Mauritius manage to experience authentic “Sega” music and dance. The Sega nights provided at hotels on the Island are commercialised and certainly not typical Creole occasions. We organise for our guests in the gardens of the Bungalows traditional Sega Night parties, to which everyone is invited, including our guests and local people from the village. We employ local musicians and dancers who benefit from this income, and provide our guests with a truly authentic taste of Mauritian Creole culture. This is your chance to be taught to dance and sing Sega by the children and their parents from the village. Where possible everything for the accommodation is bought locally and we encourage our guests to visit local family-run businesses such as village restaurants, bars & shops. We also show our guests where to find artwork, wood carvings, basket work & natural cosmetics and essential oils made and produced by local artists and businesses in the hope that they will purchase these locally produced items as souvenirs or gifts.

The fishing boats we charter will operate a tag and release scheme if requested by clients. However we acknowledge that responsible fishing provides a source of income and food to many poor families, and we ensure that any surplus fish caught by our guests and brought ashore, are sold to provide income to employ local people, and that we regularly distribute a proportion of the fish to local people in our village.

Our primary mission as a company is to provide our guests with a value for money 'Green eco friendly holiday' in unspoilt Mauritius. We respect our client’s privacy and independence, and would never presume to tell our guests where they should or should not visit, but rather try to encourage them to patronise smaller, less commercial projects that we know benefit the local area and community.

For any of our clients who express an interest in voluntary work we are able to arrange for these volunteers to give their services to organisers of projects such as:
  • Conservation projects protecting critically endangered species and fauna
  • Reclaiming and regenerating the local coast line
  • Working on sites building affordable housing for local people
(We as a company receive no remuneration for introducing volunteers to these projects)

Our properties are situated in a beautiful secluded rural mountainside location. The 1 acre site was purchased from a retired sugar cane grower, an industry which is now sadly in decline. Very little new building construction was undertaken as we preferred to partake in a building reconstruction program. We restored the old houses that were already on the land, rather than pull them down to build new. Our restored bungalows were originally used to provide living accommodation for the sugar cane cutters many years ago. We used a lot of salvaged building materials and used local stone to build dry stone boundary walls. Our gardens produce tropical fruit, coconuts and bread fruit. Much of this produce is given to our guests or friends in the village.

The Villa is fitted with solar panels which generate hot water throughout the summer season. We have ensured that no charcoal made from indigenous trees is used in our bungalow complex. Instead we have opted for a safe responsible environmentally friendly "green charcoal" briquette, when it is available for us to purchase.

Our swimming pool is drained annually for cleaning and refilled with water pumped from the local spring and then filtered. This is a preferable option than using water supplied from the Water Board, which would waste a valuable commodity used for drinking purposes. We encourage our guests to conserve water where possible, for example to flush the toilet only to remove solid waste, to shower or encourage small children to share a shallow bath. All guest waste water and sewerage is presently directed into 2 separate septic tanks for proper and effective treatment and to ensure there is no pollution of the water table.

We have implemented a recycling system for all waste. This is segregated into certain categories (glass, plastics, metals and tins, used oil, mineral water bottles, used batteries, paper waste, and all bio-degradable waste). The segregated waste is then treated accordingly - the bio-degradable waste is fed to our chickens or composted in a closed and locked pit - and the remainder collected removed for proper disposal.

Tourism can be good and bad for destinations & local people.

We carefully screen every holiday against our criteria for responsible travel.

'Look behind the brochure' to find how each holiday makes a difference (see left).

We don't claim to be perfect - there is no global accreditation - but we've led the way since 2001 and screened 1000's of holidays.

We invite every traveller to write a review about their experiences and responsible tourism.

This valuable feedback is sent to the people who run the holidays. We keep a very close eye on it and take off holidays that don't live up to our standards.
