  • how this holiday makes a difference
El Yaque in the past a small fisher village with not more than 10 families is nowadays, thanks to a healthy and positive tourism, a community which allows over 500 families a decent income and life. Here you will not find 'all inclusive hotels' but small hotels, Posadas and guesthouses and a lot of small little restaurants, cafes and bars. In El Yaque locals and tourists are living together which is one of the reasons why so many tourists always come back.

The construction of our guesthouse is a kind of 'Neo-Colonial-Style Building' designed by a famous Venezuelan Architect and built by a local construction company. The building materials used were almost the same used 100 years ago – means mostly natural construction material like the outside painting which is natural colored loam pulp.

As in the past we are using the wind as a natural air-conditioning i.e. all our rooms have their windows to the wind side and the double-door with integrated window on the other side allows the regulation of the wind you like. This allows us to save energy because air-conditioning or ventilators are used very seldom. New generation is our solar cells which are lighting part of the garden.

One of our biggest aims is to save water and we encourage our guests to help us to do so. All gray waters i.e. waters except from the toilet spoil are collected and used to rain our tropical garden. Our warm water system is powered by gas very energy saving and environmentally friendly. Our garden was designed to create new habitats for local wildlife and with the creation of bird tables and water founts birds from the neighborhood are visiting our garden.

The actual operational workforce of our guesthouse is composed of 3 full time and 2 seasonal workers all coming from our village. Together with our neighbor community we sponsored a man from a village to open his own security company of course taking care about our neighborhood.

Our restaurant of course only offers local products like fresh fish purchased by a local fisherman or fruits, vegetables or meat which we get from the local market in town and where we encourage our guests to join us at our bi-weekly purchases. The organic waste from the kitchen is worked up as fertilizer for our garden.

We minimize the use of toxic materials in our buildings and construction where possible i.e. minimize use of bleach as a cleaning agent and experiment with other appropriate options such as vinegar. We encourage guests to use towels and sheets for 2 days to minimize washing and detergent use.

Tourism can be good and bad for destinations & local people.

We carefully screen every holiday against our criteria for responsible travel.

'Look behind the brochure' to find how each holiday makes a difference (see left).

We don't claim to be perfect - there is no global accreditation - but we've led the way since 2001 and screened 1000's of holidays.

We invite every traveller to write a review about their experiences and responsible tourism.

This valuable feedback is sent to the people who run the holidays. We keep a very close eye on it and take off holidays that don't live up to our standards.
